Can you imagine waking up to the news you received a Nobel Prize?
In October 2021, Ardem Patapoutian got an early morning call letting him know he had received the medicine prize.
A little bit later, Patapoutian's wife, Nancy Hong, snapped this photo of Patapoutian and his son Luca sitting in bed with a laptop to watch the press conference that made the announcement public.
Patapoutian shared the 2021 medicine prize with David Julius for their discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch.
Starting in a few weeks, we will discover who woke up to good news. Stay tuned to our social channels to find out.

"At school I had a teacher that didn't like me and I didn't like him. At the end of the year he decided to fail me. The ironic thing is that the topic was chemistry.
I have the distinction of being the only chemistry laureate who failed the topic in high school!"

According to NASA and NOAA researchers, the ozone hole is shrinking.
One Nobel Prize laureate that would be especially thrilled after hearing this news is chemist Mario Molina, who was awarded the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for demonstrating that CFC gases were damaging the ozone layer. Thanks to his work, we have managed to reverse this depletion and the ozone layer is recovering.
In his 1995 Nobel Prize lecture, Molina said: "The ozone layer acts as an atmospheric shield which protects life on Earth against harmful ultraviolet radiation coming from the sun. This shield is fragile: in the past two decades it has become very clear that it can be affected by human activities."
