EXTENSION LECTURE HELD AT SHAH ABDUL LATIF UNIVERSITY, KHAIRPUR

An Extension Lecture on the topic “Role of Sufi Saints in the Promotion of Islam with Special Reference to Religious Harmony: The Role of Shaheed Makhdoom Abdul Rehman” held at Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur organized by Shaheed Makhdoom Abdul Rehman Chair (SMARC) in collaboration with Institute of Islamic Studies, Goth Seengar Foundation and Students Societies Centre. MNA Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro was the Chief Guest while Meritorious Professor Dr. Muhammad Yousuf Khushk, Vice Chancellor presided over the event. Mr. Fayaz Hussain Rahoojo, Deputy Commissioner Khairpur and Syed Shahid Hussain Shah Jillani, Member Central Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee were the guests of the honor. Eminent Religious Scholar Sardar Shakir Khan Mazari delivered the lecture on the above theme.

While delivering the lecture, Sardar Shakir Khan Mazari said the Sufi Saints promoted the soft image of the Islam in the hearts of the people so they embraced the Islam. While their character and attitude also contributed a lot. He stressed the need for character building, patience, tolerance among the people so the sense of unity among the people may be promoted because we are confronting several challenges in our society.

Ms. Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro remarked that the land of Sindh is the land of Sufi Saints. She also highlighted the contribution of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai (R.A) for prosperity and peace. Currently, we are status conscious. We have to change our attitude for humbleness and empathy. The need of the self-identification is the need of the time. She said western world has followed the path of Islam as result there is development there. MNA Shazia Aslam appreciated the contribution of incumbent Vice Chancellor for the development of the University and community at large.

Meritorious Professor Dr. Muhammad Yousuf Khushk said that Sindh is the cradle of Islam and Sufism. Tasawuf is the path of tolerance and peaceful co-existence. Dr. Khushk narrated the contribution of classical poets and Sufi Saints of Sindh and also described the evaluation of Sufism. He said the crux of the Sufism is services of the humanity. Sufi Saints were against the militant tendencies and promoted the essence of harmony and brotherhood and avoided from any confrontation and differences. Dr. Khushk also extended his cordial thanks for the presence of MNA Shazia Sobia Aslam Soomro in the event.

Mr. Fayaz Hussain Rahoojo said that the poetry of Sachal Sarmast, Bedal Bekas and other native Sufi poets promotes the message of peace, love and affection with masses. They never hated the people on the basis of religion, color, creed, tribe or even any identification.

Syed Shahid Hussain Shah Jillani said that the Sufi Saints promoted the concept of fear of God. It is the need of the time to promote the teaching and philosophy of the Sufi Saints.

Makhdoom Nadeem Ahmed Hashmi extended the vote of thanks to the guests, speaker and sponsors. He said that this chair will disseminate the message of Sufi Saints and multidimensional activities will be conducted under the umbrella of the Chair.

Earlier, Prof. (Retd.) Dr. Taj Muhammad Lashari, Honorary Director of the Chair welcomed the guests and speakers and especially accorded thanks to Institute of Islamic Studies, Goth Seengar Foundation and Students Societies Centre for organizing this community awareness lecture on the most important topic.

The shields and traditional gifts were presented to the guests. A large number of Faculty Members, Civil Society Activists and Students attended the lecture. Dr. Ali Raza Lashari conducted the proceedings of the lecture program.
