Climate Leadership Town Hall and Climate Policy Dialogue Held at Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur

Khairpur: In line with the climate mitigation vision and commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the Vice Chancellor, Meritorious Prof. Dr. Yousuf Khushk, the Students Societies Center, Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), in collaboration with Collective Pakistan, YECAP, NDMA Islamabad, and PMYDC, organized a Climate Leadership Town Hall and Climate Policy Dialogue to raise awareness about climate change, environmental sustainability, and youth engagement in climate action.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ali Raza Lashari, Coordinator Students Societies Center, explained the objectives of the program and highlighted the importance of involving youth in environmental initiatives. He stated that the Students Societies Center always welcomes partnerships with organizations working on environmental protection and sustainable development.

He said that climate change is not only an environmental issue but also a social and economic challenge that requires collective action. He further emphasized that universities must play a leading role in preparing young people to become responsible climate leaders and advocates for sustainable development.

Dr. Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Abro, Chairman, Department of Media and Communication Studies, welcomed the guests and participants. He stated that the media plays a vital role in spreading environmental awareness and educating communities about climate-related challenges. He added that responsible journalism and effective communication can significantly contribute to promoting environmentally responsible behavior and public participation in climate action.

The keynote speakers, Mr. Mir Mureed Ali Talpur, Deputy Director and District Incharge Khairpur, and Mr. Punhal Khoso, Assistant Director and Focal Person for Environmental Issues, District Khairpur, emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among government institutions, academia, civil society organizations, and local communities to address environmental challenges. They stressed the need for tree plantation, environmental conservation, and public awareness campaigns to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Both officials assured their full support and collaboration for future environmental initiatives and awareness campaigns in the district.

Mr. Rashid Ali Amur, Plantation Officer, Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur, announced that the university would designate a specific area for plantation drives. He stated that partner NGOs and government departments working closely with the Students Societies Center would be encouraged to plant trees in the designated area, making the university a model green campus.

Ms. Kainat, Social Activist and Postgraduate Scholar at AIT Thailand, joined the dialogue as an online speaker. She highlighted the importance of youth participation in climate governance and stressed that climate change is a global challenge requiring local solutions and international cooperation. She encouraged students to become climate ambassadors within their communities.

In his video message, Dr. Usman from NDMA Islamabad emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and community-based adaptation strategies. He appreciated the efforts of Shah Abdul Latif University and its partners in engaging youth on climate-related issues and encouraged students to actively participate in environmental protection and disaster risk reduction initiatives.

During the table discussion, Mr. Abbas highlighted the issue of illegal cutting of trees in the desert regions of Kingri, Thari, and Faiz Ganj and urged relevant authorities and communities to take immediate measures to protect these valuable natural resources.

One of the participants, Ms. Elsa Rubab Chandio, appreciated the initiative and described the dialogue as highly informative and beneficial. She expressed the hope that such awareness programs and policy dialogues would be expanded to local communities to strengthen public engagement in environmental protection efforts.

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Dr. Farman Mangi, Chairman, Department of Physics and Electronics, stated that trees and flowers contribute not only to environmental sustainability but also to human well-being and mental health. He emphasized that a green environment creates positive energy, improves quality of life, and fosters a stronger connection between people and nature. He urged everyone to actively participate in plantation and environmental conservation activities.

The event was attended by Ms. Hira Jatoi, Ms. Sadia Larik, Mr. Asad Abbas, faculty members, and a large number of students representing various youth clubs and societies of the university.

At the conclusion of the event, Mr. Muzamil Somro President PMYDC team presented the vote of thanks to the guest speakers, partner organizations, faculty members, and students for their valuable participation and contributions towards making the event a success.

World Environment Day observed at SALU with focus on climate action

SALU KHAIRPUR, June 4: The Students Societies Center of Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), in collaboration with WWF-Pakistan, organized a World Environment Day 2026 event on Thursday, bringing together environmental experts, government officials, academics, students and civil society representatives to discuss climate change, environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The programme began with an awareness walk and a tree plantation drive, followed by a series of presentations on environmental protection, biodiversity, climate resilience and sustainable agriculture.

Speaking as chief guest, Meritorious Prof Dr Yousuf Khushk, Vice Chancellor of Shah Abdul Latif University, emphasized the importance of environmental education, climate resilience and sustainable resource management. He urged policymakers, educational institutions and citizens to work together for environmental protection, describing it as a shared responsibility.

Earlier, Asif Ali Rajper, Senior Project Officer, welcomed the participants and highlighted the significance of World Environment Day, calling for greater community participation in environmental conservation efforts.

Toheed Ghani Mahesar, Programme Manager, WWF-Pakistan, discussed the organisation's initiatives in climate-smart agriculture and said innovative farming practices were essential to addressing food security challenges posed by climate change.

Punhal Khoso, Assistant Director, Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), spoke about the agency's role in enforcing environmental regulations, monitoring pollution and promoting sustainable development across the province.

Muhammad Shoukat, Japan International Emergency Cell, highlighted the importance of indigenous plant species in maintaining ecological balance, conserving water resources and supporting biodiversity.

Rajib Ali Laghari, Range Forest Officer, stressed the need to protect forests and biodiversity from threats such as deforestation and habitat degradation.

Addressing the gathering, Faiz Ali Jiskani, former District Education Officer, discussed environmental governance and called for stronger institutions and effective policy implementation to tackle environmental challenges.

Shahnawaz Jiskani, World Health Organization (WHO), highlighted the ecological significance of the Seven Lakes of Thari Mirwah and emphasized the need for conservation measures to protect the region's natural resources.

Prof Dr Mujeeb Rehman Abro, Chairman, Department of Media and Communication Studies, SALU, underlined the role of media in raising public awareness about climate change and environmental protection.

Azhar Ali Wesar of the Agriculture Extension Department highlighted the importance of adopting sustainable agricultural practices and urged farmers to utilize environmentally friendly techniques to enhance productivity while conserving natural resources.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Ali Raza Lashari, Coordinator, Students Societies Center, Shah Abdul Latif University, who appreciated the contributions of the speakers, organizers and participants.

A large number of community members, government officials, faculty members of Shah Abdul Latif University, representatives of Radio Pakistan Khairpur, students and members of various organizations attended the event. Participants described the programme as an important platform for promoting environmental awareness and encouraging collective action towards a sustainable future.

Student Awareness & Smoking Cessation Session Held at Students Societies Centre
Khairpur Mir’s, May 25, 2026 — On the directives of the Vice Chancellor, Meritorious Prof. Dr. Yousuf Khushk, the Anti-Narcotics Societies, in collaboration with the Insan Dost Social Organization (IDSO) and supported by PMYDC and ARI, organized a Student Awareness & Smoking Cessation Session at the Students Societies Centre.
The Coordinator Students Societies Centre stated that the session was conducted under the theme “Quit Smoking, Live Better – Making Pakistan Smoke-Free” with the objective of raising awareness among students regarding the harmful effects of to***co use and promoting healthier, addiction-free lifestyles through evidence-based to***co control education.
Speakers highlighted the serious health consequences of smoking and stressed the importance of prevention, awareness, and early cessation. They also emphasized the vital role of youth as agents of positive social change in building a healthy and responsible society.
The interactive session witnessed active participation from students, who engaged with experts, shared their views, and discussed practical strategies for quitting to***co and supporting peers in smoking cessation efforts.
Representatives of the Insan Dost Social Organization reaffirmed their commitment to public health promotion and youth empowerment through awareness-based initiatives. Representatives of the university’s Anti-Narcotics Societies reiterated their support for programs aligned with national health priorities and anti-drug awareness campaigns.
The session concluded with a collective pledge by students to discourage to***co use within educational institutions and spread awareness in their communities.
Among the distinguished participants were Ms. Shumilla Rubab Rizvi, Mr. Abdul Jabbar Islami (CEO, IDSO), and Mr. Muzamil Somro, President PMYDC Team.

🇵🇰🇨🇳 SEMINAR MARKS 75 YEARS OF PAKISTAN–CHINA DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS AT SALU KHAIRPUR
KHAIRPUR MIRS, May 22, 2026 – Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, hosted a commemorative seminar to celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China. The event, organized by the Prime Minister’s Youth Development Council (PMYDC) team, brought together faculty members, students, and international scholars to reflect on the enduring friendship and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Delivering the keynote address online, Dr. Lei, Deputy Director of the China-Pakistan Joint Research Centre (CPJRC), described Pakistan and China as “Iron Brothers” bound by an All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership since 1951. He highlighted the transformative role of CPEC and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in promoting regional connectivity, economic growth, and employment opportunities.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Wahid Bux Jatoi, Pro Vice Chancellor (Main Campus), emphasized the importance of “academic diplomacy” in strengthening international understanding and encouraging students to study Pakistan-China relations as a model of mutual trust and shared aspirations.
Prof. Dr. Mehmood Khan Laghari, Dean Faculty of Management Sciences, stressed the role of youth and academic institutions in understanding global relations and preparing skilled graduates for emerging opportunities under CPEC.

Session Focused on Short Service Commission Course 2026-B
Khairpur Mir’s, May 21, 2026 — The Pakistan Navy Recruitment Team conducted an exclusive career induction session at the Students Society Centre, attracting enthusiastic participation from students belonging to various academic disciplines.
The session provided comprehensive guidance regarding the Pakistan Navy Short Service Commission Course 2026-B, including eligibility criteria, online registration procedures, initial tests, selection process, and available career opportunities within the Pakistan Navy.
The session was conducted by Lt Commander Yasir Kamran Khawaja, PN, Officer Incharge, and Lieutenant Muhammad Mazhar Saleem, PN, Psychologist Officer, who shared valuable insights about professional growth, leadership development, discipline, and the honor of serving the nation through the Pakistan Navy.
