The Gilgit Baltistan with a total area of about 72500 sq. km is administratively divided into 6-Districts i.e. Gilgit, Skardu, Diamer, Ghizar, Ghanche and Astore with 22 Tehsils/ Sub-Divisions are among the most backward areas of Pakistan in terms of educational indicators especially for Girls. Educational Development in Gilgit Baltistan remained neglected in the past due to many pertinent reasons beyond the Government control. On inception of the Northern Education Project (NEP) Phase-I the development in Education sector has been improved a lot.
The Education Department Gilgit Baltistan is the largest provider of educational services in the Gilgit Baltistan with direct responsibility for 1672 schools, 03 Teacher's Training Colleges and 15 Colleges (elementary and secondary) and about 75% of enrolments.
AKES, P is the second largest education provider. AKES, P is mainly focusing girl’s education with some enrolment of boys in co- education classes. AKES, P operates schools in all districts of NA.
The population of Gilgit Baltistan is 0.887 (M) according to 1998. The average annual growth rate of population has dramatically declined to 2.00% from 2.56%. (Economic Survey-2005) The gap between population based educational requirements and available facilities became wider and wider over the time. Although, a lot of improvements have been seen in the system over the last 5-10 years, educational facilities however, are still inadequate to meet present and the future needs. The overall literacy rate of Gilgit Baltistan is 38% which is lower than the National rate of 52% (Economic Survey 2005). The female education in Gilgit Baltistan as in the rest of the country particularly the rural areas, is not at satisfactory level to provide educational opportunities and equity in access.
