Fraud Alert: Don’t Judge a Beverage by Its Bottle. Part 02 This Time Famous Sting.
Look at what is happening behind the scenes.
When branded beverage bottles are collected, washed or handled improperly, and refilled with unverified local drinks, it is more than a hygiene issue. It can fall under food fraud, product counterfeiting, and consumer deception.
The biggest concern is that consumers may purchase these products believing they are genuine branded beverages, while the actual contents may have:
❌ Unknown formulation or ingredients
❌ No verified quality control
❌ No traceability or batch information
❌ Poor hygienic handling
❌ Potential microbiological contamination
❌ No assurance of proper processing or storage conditions
And the question is not only “What is inside the bottle?" The bigger question is:
1. Who manufactured it?
2. Where was it produced?
3. Was it processed under hygienic conditions?
4. Was the bottle properly cleaned and sanitized?
5. Is the product traceable?
Food safety is not just about the final product it is about every step from processing and packaging to distribution and consumption.
As consumers, we should be more careful about suspiciously packaged beverages, especially at weddings, events, roadside outlets, and informal markets.
As food professionals, regulators, and businesses, we must continue raising awareness against food fraud and unsafe food practices.
A branded bottle does not automatically mean a genuine product.
