Teaching b, d, p and q Through Activity-Based Learning
The letters b, d, p, and q have the same shape but in different directions. This can often be confusing for young children.
For one week, I focused only on these four letters and taught them through activity-based learning. The children practised recognising, reading, and writing the letters correctly through many fun activities.
We used daily-use objects at home and in school, as well as a Spy Basket, letter hunts, dictation, matching letters with pictures, identifying the beginning letter of words, and many other activities.
In the second week, I focused on assessment and revision, and the results were excellent.
My recommendation is to first focus on these four letters and give children enough time and practice. This strong foundation can help reduce confusion between b, d, p, and q for a long time.
There is no need to focus on recognising letters only in sequence. With consistent practice and activity-based learning, it will work!
