Urdu Pedagogy Training My goal: Train all Urdu teachers in 21st Century Pedagogy and bring them to an international standard Ms.

Romeena Kureishy has been teaching Urdu in the US since 2008. She taught at the University of Pennsylvania STARTALK Urdu Program from 2008-2014 and has been with New York University Hindi Urdu Teacher Training Institute as an Urdu Pedagogy Specialist since 2015. She has also served as Urdu Program Coordinator and Lead Instructor for Kean University’s Global Project-based Learning STARTALK Program since 2017. In addition to working with STARTALK Programs, she has taught Beginner and Intermediate Urdu courses as an adjunct at University of Pennsylvania. Kureishy has extensive experience in curriculum and lesson development and provides teacher training to Urdu teachers in the US, and more recently in Pakistan, where since Dec 2021 she has trained over 1000 Urdu and other language teachers from more than 200 schools. She has also served as an Independent Urdu Specialist for the American Councils for International Education in Washington D.C. since 2012, working on proficiency tests for Urdu language. She is a consultant to US based Urdu schools and oversees curriculum development and teacher training. She was an instructor for an IB Urdu course offered at Granite Bay high school, CA. She is also the founding member of a non-profit organization promoting South Asian art and culture in the Tri-State area of PA, NJ, and DE. She organized a collaboration between AKU-IED and NYU to offer the first ever Urdu Pedagogy certification course at AKU IED in July 2022. She was appointed as an honorary research associate/visiting faculty at AKU-IED. She has also collaborated to organize the first ever 21st century Urdu Pedagogy Training course at the Department of Urdu, Karachi University held in Feb 2023. Kureishy holds a BA in Psychology, an MA in Urdu and is pursuing an MPhil in Urdu from Karachi University. Romeena has lived in the US since 1991, her family includes her husband and daughter.

NYU Hindi Urdu Teacher Training Institute is accepting applications and the program will accept some teachers from Pakistan as well.

Since the program is taught by various faculty, you must be able to read and understand spoken English.

Please go to the link below and fill out ALL three forms on the page (there are links to each one: Application, Questionnaire and Consent). Please make sure to follow instructions and complete all necessary paperwork.

Thursdays: 5-8 pm Saturdays: 7-9 pm Sundays: 7- 11 pm

Admissions The program admits a total of twenty participants with a Bachelor’s or higher degree and Hindi or Urdu language proficiency at the Advanced level or beyond on the ACTFL scale (for those applicants unfamiliar with this scale please see below what you should be able to do in the language)...
