"کیپ ٹائون" کا ان پڑھہ سرجن مسٹر " ھملٹن " جس کو ماسٹر آف میڈیسن کی اعزازی ڈگری دی گئی، جو نہ لکھنا جانتا تھا نہ پڑھنا، یہ کیسے ممکن ھے آئیے دیکھتے ھیں۔

کیپ ٹاﺅن کی میڈیکل یونیورسٹی کو طبی دنیا میں ممتاز حیثیت حاصل ہے۔
دنیا کا پہلا بائی پاس آپریشن اسی یونیورسٹی میں ہوا تھا‘
اس یونیورسٹی نے چند سال پہلے ایک ایسے سیاہ فام شخص کو
”ماسٹر آف میڈیسن“

کی اعزازی ڈگری سے نوازا جس نے زندگی میں کبھی اسکول کا منہ نہیں دیکھا تھا۔
جو انگریزی کا ایک لفظ پڑھ سکتا تھا
اور
نہ ہی لکھ سکتا تھا.....

لیکن 2003ء کی ایک صبح دنیا کے مشہور سرجن پروفیسر ڈیوڈ ڈینٹ نے یونیورسٹی کے آڈیٹوریم میں اعلان کیا:،
"ہم آج ایک ایسے شخص کو میڈیسن کی اعزازی ڈگری دے رہے ہیں جس نے دنیا میں سب سے زیادہ سرجن پیدا کیے،
جو ایک غیر معمولی استاد، ایک حیران کن سرجن ہے، اور
جس نے میڈیکل سائنس
اور
انسانی دماغ کو حیران کر دیا۔

اس اعلان کے ساتھ ہی پروفیسر نے " ہیملٹن " کا نام لیا،
اور
پورے آڈیٹوریم نے کھڑے ہو کراس کا استقبال کیا۔

یہ اس یونیورسٹی کی تاریخ کا سب سے بڑا استقبال تھا“۔
”ہیملٹن کیپ ٹاﺅن کے ایک دور دراز گاﺅں " سنیٹانی " میں پیدا ہوا۔
اس کے والدین چرواہے تھے، وہ بکری کی کھال پہنتا تھا اور پہاڑوں پر سارا سارا دن ننگے پاﺅں پھرتا تھا،
بچپن میں اس کاوالد بیمار ہو گیا لہٰذا وہ بھیڑ بکریاں چھوڑ کر "کیپ ٹاﺅن" آگیا۔ ان دنوں "کیپ ٹاﺅن یونیورسٹی" میں تعمیرات جاری تھیں۔
وہ یونیورسٹی میں مزدور بھرتی ہو گیا۔
اسے دن بھر کی محنت مشقت کے بعد جتنے پیسے ملتے تھے، وہ یہ پیسے گھر بھجوا دیتا تھا
اور
خود چنے چبا کر کھلے گراﺅنڈ میں سو جاتا تھا۔
وہ برسوں مزدور کی حیثیت سے کام کرتا رہا۔ تعمیرات کا سلسلہ ختم ہوا
تو
وہ یونیورسٹی میں مالی بھرتی ہوگیا۔ ......
اسے ٹینس کورٹ کی گھاس کاٹنے کا کام ملا، ........
وہ روز ٹینس کورٹ پہنچتا اور گھاس کاٹنا شروع کر دیتا ، . ......
وہ تین برس تک یہ کام کرتا رہا ......
پھر اس کی زندگی میں ایک عجیب موڑ آیا
اور
وہ میڈیکل سائنس کے اس مقام تک پہنچ گیا جہاں آج تک کوئی دوسرا شخص نہیں پہنچا۔

یہ ایک نرم اور گرم صبح تھی۔”پروفیسر رابرٹ جوئز" زرافے پر تحقیق کر رہے تھے، وہ یہ دیکھنا چاہتے تھے کہ:

"جب زرافہ پانی پینے کے لیے گردن جھکاتا ہے تو اسے غشی کا دورہ کیوں نہیں پڑتا،"

انہوں نے آپریشن ٹیبل پر ایک زرافہ لٹایا، اسے بے ہوش کیا،
لیکن جوں ہی آپریشن شروع ہوا، زرافے نے گردن ہلا دی،
چنانچہ انہیں ایک ایسے مضبوط شخص کی ضرورت پڑ گئی جو آپریشن کے دوران زرافے کی گردن جکڑ کر رکھے۔

پروفیسر تھیٹر سے باہر آئے، سامنے 'ہیملٹن' گھاس کاٹ رہا تھا،
پروفیسر نے دیکھا وہ ایک مضبوط قد کاٹھ کا صحت مند جوان ہے۔ انہوں نے اسے اشارے سے بلایا اور اسے زرافے کی گردن پکڑنے کا حکم دے دیا۔ " ہیملٹن" نے گردن پکڑ لی،

یہ آپریشن آٹھ گھنٹے جاری رہا۔ اس دوران ڈاکٹر چائے اورکافی کے وقفے کرتے رہے، لیکن
" ہیملٹن "
زرافے کی گردن تھام کر کھڑا رہا۔ آپریشن ختم ہوا تو وہ چپ چاپ باہر نکلا اور جا کر گھاس کاٹنا شروع کر دی۔

دوسرے دن پروفیسر نے اسے دوبارہ بلا لیا، وہ آیا اور زرافے کی گردن پکڑ کر کھڑا ہوگیا، اس کے بعد یہ اس کی روٹین ہوگئی وہ یونیورسٹی آتا آٹھ دس گھنٹے آپریشن تھیٹر میں جانوروں کو پکڑتا اور اس کے بعد ٹینس کورٹ کی گھاس کاٹنے لگتا، وہ کئی مہینے دوہرا کام کرتا رہا،
اور
اس نے اس ڈیوٹی کا کسی قسم کا اضافی معاوضہ طلب کیا
اور
نہ ہی شکایت کی۔

پروفیسر رابرٹ جوئز اس کی استقامت اور اخلاص سے متاثر ہوگیا
اور
اس نے اسے مالی سے ”لیب اسسٹنٹ“ بنا دیا۔

" ہیملٹن " کی پروموشن ہوگئی۔ وہ اب یونیورسٹی آتا، آپریشن تھیٹر پہنچتا اور سرجنوں کی مدد کرتا۔ یہ سلسلہ بھی برسوں جاری رہا۔

1958ء میں اس کی زندگی میں دوسرا اہم موڑ آیا۔ اس سال " ڈاکٹر برنارڈ " یونیورسٹی آئے اور انہوں نے دل کی منتقلی کے آپریشن شروع کر دیئے۔

" ہیملٹن " ان کا اسسٹنٹ بن گیا، وہ " ڈاکٹر برنارڈ"
کے کام کو غور سے دیکھتا رہتا، ان آپریشنوں کے دوران وہ اسسٹنٹ سے ایڈیشنل سرجن بن گیا۔

اب ڈاکٹر آپریشن کرتے
اور
آپریشن کے بعد اسے ٹانکے لگانے کا فریضہ سونپ دیتے، وہ انتہائی شاندار ٹانکے لگاتا تھا، اس کی انگلیوں میں صفائی اور تیزی تھی، اس نے ایک ایک دن میں پچاس پچاس لوگوں کے ٹانکے لگائے۔ وہ آپریشن تھیٹر میں کام کرتے ہوئے سرجنوں سے زیادہ انسانی جسم کو سمجھنے لگا....

چنانچہ
بڑے ڈاکٹروں نے اسے جونیئر ڈاکٹروں کو سکھانے کی ذمہ داری سونپ دی۔

وہ اب جونیئر ڈاکٹروں کو آپریشن کی تکنیکس سکھانے لگا۔ وہ آہستہ آہستہ یونیورسٹی کی اہم ترین شخصیت بن گیا۔ وہ میڈیکل سائنس کی اصطلاحات سے ناواقف تھا،
لیکن
وہ دنیا کے بڑے سے بڑے سرجن سے بہتر سرجن تھا۔

1970ءمیں اس کی زندگی میں تیسرا موڑ آیا، اس سال جگر پر تحقیق شروع ہوئی تو اس نے آپریشن کے دوران جگر کی ایک ایسی شریان کی نشاندہی کردی. .....جس کی وجہ سے جگر کی منتقلی آسان ہوگئی۔

اس کی اس نشاندہی نے میڈیکل سائنس کے بڑے دماغوں کو حیران کر دیا،

آج جب دنیا کے کسی کونے میں کسی شخص کے جگر کا آپریشن ہوتا ہے
اور
مریض آنکھ کھول کر روشنی کو دیکھتا ہے
تو
اس کامیاب آپریشن کا ثواب براہ راست " ھملٹن " کو چلا جاتا ہے، اس کا محسن 'ہیملٹن'' ہوتا ہے“

" ہیملٹن " نے یہ مقام اخلاص اور استقامت سے حاصل کیا۔ وہ 50 برس کیپ ٹاﺅن یونیورسٹی سے وابستہ رہا، ان 50 برسوں میں
اس نے کبھی چھٹی نہیں کی۔
وہ رات تین بجے گھر سے نکلتا تھا، 14 میل پیدل چلتا ہوا یونیورسٹی پہنچتا اور
ٹھیک چھ بجے تھیٹر میں داخل ہو جاتا۔
لوگ اس کی آمدورفت سے اپنی گھڑیاں ٹھیک کرتے تھے،

ان پچاس برسوں میں اس نے کبھی تنخواہ میں اضافے کا مطالبہ نہیں کیا،

اس نے کبھی اوقات کار کی طوالت
اور
سہولتوں میں کمی کا شکوہ نہیں کیا.......
پھر
اس کی زندگی میں ایک ایسا وقت آیا جب اس کی تنخواہ اور مراعات یونیورسٹی کے وائس چانسلر سے زیادہ تھیں
اور
اسے وہ اعزاز ملا جو آج تک میڈیکل سائنس کے کسی شخص کو نہیں ملا۔

وہ میڈیکل ہسٹری کاپہلا ان پڑھ استاد تھا۔
وہ پہلا ان پڑھ سرجن تھا جس نے زندگی میں تیس ہزار سرجنوں کو ٹریننگ دی،
وہ 2005ء میں فوت ہوا تو اسے یونیورسٹی میں دفن کیا گیا
اور
اس کے بعد یونیورسٹی سے پاس آﺅٹ ہونے والے سرجنوں کے لئے لازم قرار دے دیا گیا وہ ڈگری لینے کے بعد اس کی قبر پر جائیں، تصویر بنوائیں
اور
اس کے بعد عملی زندگی میں داخل ہوجائیں....“

میں رکا اور اس کے بعد نوجوانوں سے پوچھا:
”تم جانتے ہو اس نے یہ مقام کیسے حاصل کیا“

نوجوان خاموش رہا، میں نے عرض کیا:

”صرف ایک ہاں سے‘

جس دن اسے زرافے کی گردن پکڑنے کے لئے آپریشن تھیٹر میں بلایا گیا تھا
اگر وہ اس دن انکار کر دیتا، اگر وہ اس دن یہ کہہ دیتا میں مالی ہوں میرا کام زرافوں کی گردنیں پکڑنا نہیں
تو
وہ مرتے دم تک مالی رہتا.

یہ اس کی ایک ہاں اور آٹھ گھنٹے کی اضافی مشقت تھی جس نے اس کے لئے کامیابی کے دروازے کھول دیئے اور وہ سرجنوں کا سرجن بن گیا“ ۔

”ہم میں سے زیادہ تر لوگ زندگی بھر جاب تلاش کرتے رہتے ہیں.

جبکہ

ہمیں کام تلاش کرنا چاہیے“

” دنیا کی ہر جاب کا کوئی نہ کوئی کرائی ٹیریا ہوتا ہے اور
یہ جاب صرف اس شخص کو ملتی ہے جو اس کرائی ٹیریا پر پورا اترتا ہے
جبکہ
کام کا کوئی کرائی ٹیریا نہیں ہوتا۔ میں اگر آج چاہوں تو میں چند منٹوں میں دنیا کا کوئی بھی کام شروع کر سکتا ہوں اور دنیا کی کوئی طاقت مجھے اس کام سے باز نہیں رکھ سکے گی۔

"" ہیملٹن"" اس راز کو پا گیا تھا لہٰذا اس نے جاب کی بجائے کام کو فوقیت دی. یوں اس نے میڈیکل سائنس کی تاریخ بدل دی۔

ذرا سوچو، اگر وہ سرجن کی جاب کے لئے اپلائی کرتا
تو
کیا وہ سرجن بن سکتا تھا؟ کبھی نہیں،
لیکن
اس نے کھرپہ نیچے رکھا، زرافے کی گردن تھامی
اور
سرجنوں کا سرجن بن گیا اور ہم اس لئے بے روزگار اور ناکام رہتے ہیں کہ صرف جاب تلاش کرتے ہیں، کام نہیں، جس دن "" ہیملٹن"" کی طرح کام شروع کر دیا
