On December 14, 2008, then–U.S. President George W. Bush was addressing reporters in Baghdad alongside Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki when an unexpected protest took place on live television. Near the close of the press conference, Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi stood up and threw his shoes toward the podium, shouting a statement in Arabic that he described as a “farewell kiss” from the Iraqi people. In many parts of the Middle East, throwing a shoe is considered a strong sign of disrespect.
Bush reacted quickly, dodging the first shoe and then moving again as a second one was thrown. Neither hit him. Security personnel immediately intervened and detained al-Zaidi as the room briefly descended into confusion. Despite the disruption, Bush remained composed and later made light of the moment, referring to it as an example of free expression.
Footage of the incident spread rapidly across the world and became one of the most widely viewed political clips of the time. Many saw it as a symbolic expression of frustration over the Iraq War. Al-Zaidi was later sentenced to prison, though his sentence was reduced on appeal.
The moment remains one of the most memorable instances of live political protest, illustrating both the charged atmosphere of the period and Bush’s quick reaction under pressure.
