New advances in technology are generally targeted at making our lives better, but any improvement will fall short if it fails to help us preserve and improve the world.
Even before the pandemic hit, the clock was already ticking on our ability to avert an impending climate crisis. The pandemic has given us some additional challenges in terms of balancing economic recovery with environmental sustainability, but it could also be viewed as offering an unprecedented opportunity.
Fortunately, 5G has been designed from the outset as a more energy-efficient technology than its predecessors, and it also has the potential to unlock broader environmental stewardship by means of a number of forward-looking use cases. By enabling behavioral changes, such as allowing larger numbers of people to work from home or almost anywhere else (WFX) and by improving fleet management for efficient transport, 5G could both, directly and indirectly, support measures that improve the quality and management of water, air, and soil, and also nurture other key parts of the environment like forests.

Pakistan has entered the $1 trillion global cloud kitchen market during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As restaurant owners cope with lockdown restrictions and government SOPs to prevent the spread of the virus, the cloud kitchen market has grown in Pakistan. A cloud kitchen restaurant operates as a ghost kitchen on a delivery-only model. It has a ghost kitchen that contains kitchen equipment and facilities but has no dining area for walk-in customers.
The global cloud kitchen market relies on online orders placed through a website, mobile app, or online food aggregators.
Abdus Samad Rashid, founder, and CEO of Hotpod explains here that “Cloud kitchens help food brands discover themselves digitally. The coronavirus situation has also acted as a steroid to the idea which was already gaining popularity due to the mounting costs of restaurants.”
Hotpod is the first shared cloud kitchen in Pakistan. It is a Karachi-based kitchen that operates as a Service (KaaS) platform enabling restaurants and food owners to expand their network by accessing a managed kitchen infrastructure with minimum capital risk, zero hassle, time-saving, and excellence in customer service. Hotpod has launched its operations from 3 kitchens in Karachi and plans to expand to more than 50 shared cloud kitchens in the country.
The potential of the cloud market in Pakistan is roughly about Rs7.5 billion ($47 million) per year. "The major drivers behind the success of cloud kitchen business included high demand for online food delivery, rising real-estate costs, and coronavirus infections," says Adeel Hashmi, the Chief Growth Officer at Hotpod.
While Pakistan's food industry is estimated to be around Rs20 billion per year, the introduction of cloud kitchens can boost revenue for restaurant owners which were adversely affected by the pandemic.

SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet is fast approaching the speed of regular broadband, a test has found.
Elon Musk's space-based network, which beams internet down from 1,650 satellites in orbit, recorded an average download speed of 97.23 megabits per second (Mbps) in the second quarter of 2021, according to a report from Speedtest, published Wednesday.
Starlink wasn't too far off the average download speed for US fixed broadband providers. They averaged 115.22 Mbps during the second quarter, Speedtest said in its report.
Fixed broadband providers, including AT&T Internet and Comcast, deliver internet through a phone line or fiber optic cables.
Starlink's average download speed in the first quarter of 2021 was 65.72 Mbps, Speedtest said.
With a 100 Mbps download speed, users can download a film in under a minute, according to the USwitch speed calculator.
According to the Speedtest report, fixed broadband recorded median latency of 14 milliseconds (ms) in the second quarter. Starlink was the only satellite service to come close to this, with a latency of 45 ms, according to the report. Latency is a measure of the time it takes to send data and receive a response, and the shorter the time, the better.
Starlink has lower latency speeds than HughesNet and Viasat, competitors cited in the Speedtest report because its satellites are closer to Earth.
The Speedtest report showed that HughesNet and Viasat provided average download speeds of 19.73 Mbps and 18.13 Mbps respectively in the second quarter.
In October, Starlink told its users that they should expect download speeds between 50 and 150 Mbps and latency from 20ms to 40ms as the company enhanced its systems. However, some users have seen speeds of more than 210 Mbps.

Indonesia’s Floating solar photovoltaic (PV), initially considered a niche technology, is now the fastest-growing solar PV category, alongside ground-mounted utility-scale solar and rooftop PV. As of August 2020, more than 60 countries have actively pursued the deployment of floating PV, with more than 35 installing an estimated 350 operational floating PV systems, equal to a total 2.6 GW of installed capacity.
DNV acted as the Lender’s Technical Advisor, during the development phase, for Indonesia’s first-ever floating solar photovoltaic (PV) project at Cirata Reservoir in West Java. The project owner, PT. Indonesia’s Pembangkitan Jawa Bali Masdar Solar Energi (PMSE), is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar (MASDAR) and Indonesian state-owned electricity company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) subsidiary PJBI.
Indonesia’s PMSE achieved financial close for the project on August 3, 2021, after the satisfactory completion of the lender’s due diligence review. The senior debt of the floating solar project is being provided by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Societe Generale, and Standard Chartered Bank.
Once operational, the 145 MWac Cirata floating PV plant will be one of the largest of its kind in South East Asia. The region is already home to several large-scale floating PV systems including Vietnam’s 70 MW FPV system in Quang Thanh and Singapore’s 60 MW facility at Tengah reservoir.
The Cirata floating PV project will have a plant capacity of 145 MWac. All power generated by the plant will be supplied and sold to PLN under a power purchase agreement (PPA).
DNV supported the first phase of the Cirata floating PV project, which began in April 2020 and involved pre-construction due diligence. DNV’s role included undertaking site studies, estimating solar resource data and energy yield, and reviewing the financial model’s technical assumptions.
\For Indonesia, which has historically relied on coal, gas, geothermal, and hydropower to produce electricity, the Cirata floating solar power plant is expected to pioneer significant growth in solar PV by demonstrating the technical and commercial feasibility of solar PV systems in the country.
