Types of Sentences

Articles:
Articles in English are small words that precede nouns to clarify their meaning. There are two types of articles: definite and indefinite.

1. Indefinite Articles: "a" and "an"
"A" is used before words that begin with a consonant sound.
"An" is used before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
Examples:
"A":
I saw a cat in the garden.
She wants to buy a book.
"An":
He ate an apple for breakfast.
She is an engineer.

Note: The choice between "a" and "an" is based on the sound that follows, not necessarily the first letter of the word. For example:

He is a university student. ("University" begins with a "yoo" sound, which is a consonant sound.)
She gave an honest answer. ("Honest" begins with a silent "h," so the word starts with a vowel sound.)

2. Definite Article: "The"
"The" is used before both singular and plural nouns when referring to something specific or already known to the listener or reader.
Examples:
•Singular:
The cat on the roof is mine.
He took the book from the table.
•Plural:
The cats in the neighborhood are noisy.
The books on the shelf belong to her.
"The" can also be used with non-count nouns:

The water in the glass is cold.
