In continuation to CTL's Continuous Professional Development workshop series, we are organizing two workshops in the coming week. Our first workshop will focus on Effective Teaching Skills and the second one on Effective Student-Teacher Relationship for Enhancing Students' Learning.

In continuation to its Leadership Development Program, Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) organized an international seminar focusing on Quality Enhancement and Accreditation on Tuesday, December 28, 2021. Deans, Directors, CODs, UMO heads and faculty members from Dr. Hasan Murad School of Management, School of Engineering, Office of Cooperate Linkages and Placement, School of Media and Communication Studies, School of Commerce and Accountancy, Office of the Controller Examination, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, School of Governance and Society, Office of Dean Research, School of Professional Psychology, Institute of Liberal Arts, Institute of Islamic Perspective and Guidance and Institute of Aviation Studies participated in this seminar.
Dr. Nadeem A Khan was the guest speaker of the event. He is a senior professional with over thirty years of experience contributing to excellence towards all aspects of an academic institution – academic programs, teaching & learning, quality assurance and accreditation. He worked in leadership positions in several countries and contexts. He is aware of the principles of best practice in institutional and academic accreditation, university rankings, quality improvement, institutional effectiveness, teaching, training, staff professional development and leadership in the Higher Education sector. He functioned in various roles such as Assistant Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Program & Curricula, Dean Accreditation, Chair of Quality Improvement, Program Chair, budget and financial planner, a consultant for the EU funded projects, classroom lecturer, and principal of a school as well as a staff development resource for a leading commercial bank. He was awarded UAE Golden Residence Visa in Recognition of Services in the Specialized Field.
The seminar aimed on providing guidelines to develop and implement best practices in education and research; implementation of quality at every step; monitor the implementation of best practices; continuously strive for further improvement and how to get international accreditations. Dr. Khan shared his personal experiences that how he worked hard to get different international accreditations like QAA and ABET for his institution. This session was really an embodiment of learning, engagement and interaction. It was concluded with question & answer session and feedback from the participants.

Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) organized an international faculty capacity building workshop on Teaching Philosophy, Course Design and Planning on Thursday, December 16, 2021. Faculty members from Institute of Liberal Arts, School of Systems Technology, School of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Institute of Liberal Arts, Dr. Hasan Murad School of Management, School of Professional Psychology, School of Health Sciences, School of Social Sciences and Humanities, School of Science and Institute of Aviation Studies participated in this workshop.
Mr. Faisal Shahzad facilitated this training session. Faisal Shahzad is a Founder & CEO of Stepping Stone International firm Finland. He also works as a Senior lecturer in the department of business administration at Estonian Business School. He holds more than 10 years of teaching experience in Europe, the U.A.E and Pakistan. He has initiated several European Union-funded projects like Edu-SMEs, NOBANET, IGWL, and Finn partnership. He has been working as a visiting faculty member in several institutions like Arcada UAS, Metropolia UAS Helsinki, TTKT Tallinn, and IOBM Karachi. He also works as a Teacher trainer guidance counselor, where he conducts pedagogical teaching training for teachers and lecturers in Finland, U.A.E, and Pakistan.
The workshop aimed at discussing success story National Curriculum ECHEF; knowledge, knowledge management, theory of knowledge; 6 C's characteristics of classroom and active learning strategies for the classroom. Great interest was shown by the attendees of the workshop through discussion on contents of the workshop.

Teaching Large Classes

Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) organized a half day workshop on "Teaching Large Classes" on November 25, 2021. The facilitators of the workshop were Ms. Sadia Asif (Trainer & Professional Linguist and Director CTL at UMT) and Dr. Mansoor Bhatty (Consultant at the Center for Innovative Teaching, Robert Morris University, PA, USA). Faculty members from different departments and schools of the UMT participated in this interactive training session.

The workshop aimed at discussing:

1. Variety of practical methods and practices
2. Useful tips and pointers to manage the class
3. Large class as a resource, rather than a challenge
4. How to plan lessons specifically adapted for large classes

Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) in collaboration with the Centre for Innovative Teaching (CIT), Robert Morris University Pennsylvania, USA, is starting a workshop series on "Teaching Large Classes''.
Teaching a large class requires a very different set of skills than what we typically need in other classes; moreover, students in large classes also experience significant challenges to their learning, especially if they are new to the university experience. In these training sessions we will explore innovative pedagogical ideas to overcome challenges in teaching large classes with appropriate teaching and learning strategies, vision, and support.
These training sessions are mandatory for those faculty members who are teaching Cohort courses.

This talk will provide insights into the verbal and nonverbal behaviours of professors who excel in the large class, as well as their use of technology, in building teacher immediacy. Given the place of large classes in today's universities, understanding how they can be best delivered is critically important for the student experience, for learning and, ultimately, for the future of universities themselves. The development of positive relationships between instructor and students through the professor's verbal and nonverbal communication, or teacher immediacy, plays a major role in the development of a successful learning environment.
