Atmospheric greenhouse gases (GHGs) drive climate change, with agricultural COโ, CHโ, and NโO emissions rising sharply since the pre-industrial era. Biochar technology alone could cut soil GHG emissions by 1.8 Gt COโeq annuallyโmaking agriculture part of the solution, not just the problem. Many developing countries lack precise measurement tools and rely on IPCC emission factors. To bridge this gap, Hochschule Geisenheim University (Germany) and NUST (Pakistan) are hosting a DAAD-funded summer school โAssesGHG_RemoveCโ at NUST, offering funded travel grants to select assistant professors and PhD students in Climate Change, Agronomy, Agroecology, and related fields.
๐๐๐ฃ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ
The summer school will cover GHG formation and soil emissions, hands-on training with advanced measurement instruments, data analysis, and interpretationโ including flux chamber systems, sampling methods, and calculation protocols.

Biochar produced via clean pyrolysis of organic biomass is a promising tool for sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, and carbon sequestration, with potential to cut 1.8 Gt COโ eq/year. It improves soil fertility, structure, microbial activity, and nutrient cycling, helping boost crop yields, restore degraded soils, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Hochschule Geisenheim University (Germany) and the National University of Sciences and Technology (Pakistan) are hosting the Biochar Academy at NUST under the DAAD-funded โAssesGHG_RemoveCโ project. The program brings together researchers, practitioners, and students to explore the science, benefits, and applications of biochar. Limited funded travel grants are available for assistant professors and highly engaged PhD students in Climate Change, Agronomy, Agroecology, and Soil & Environmental Sciences.
๐๐๐ฃ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐จ๐๐ฅ๐ฌ
The Biochar Academy offers a comprehensive learning experience from leading global experts, combining hands on training in biochar production. It aims to deepen understanding of biocharโs environmental and agricultural benefits, foster collaboration, and equip participants with the skills to advance biochar research and practical applications.
