Japanese scientists have achieved a major breakthrough in genetics by successfully removing the extra chromosome 21 — the cause of Down syndrome — from cultured human cells. Using CRISPR technology, they eliminated the third copy of chromosome 21 in a subset of trisomy-21 cells, marking an important step toward possible future therapies.

Experts, however, stress that the research is still in its early stages, has not been tested in humans, and raises serious ethical questions about genetic engineering and human diversity. They call for strict oversight and global discussion before any clinical applications are considered.
