The Foundation Public School & College organised a trip to Khewra Salt Mines for the students on November 23, 2017.
In Khewra, salt is found in 326 BC. While Alexander, The Great was staying here with his army during his battle with Raja Poras on the bank of River Jhelum, and horses of his army soliders were grazing here and there on this land, and suddenly they were found licking the stones nearby. Later on it was discovered that they were salt mountains.
Its a part of the mineral-rich mountain range called the Salt Range, it’s the 2nd largest salt mines in the world spread over an area of 300 KM (186 miles), width is from 8 to 30 km and height is 2200ft to 4990ft only behind the largest salt mine in the world at Goderich, Ontario. Khewra Salt mine is also called as the 'Natural Museum on the Earth'.
In 1849, Britishers took its charge and started working here on scientific basis to get salt. In 1872, under the guidance of a famous British Mining Engineer named Dr. Warth, one of the biggest tunnel in Khewra Mine is digged in order to get an access to the rest of the mines inside.
At present, Khewra mine has 17 stories. Ground floor has been opened for the tourists.
According to scientific rules and regulations 50 % of the salt is taken from here for the consumption while the rest of 50 % of the salt is left over here so that it can work as a pillar to give a support to the mine range.
Our trip day started with a low temperature, but as the day progressed rays of sunshine finally took over. Our destination, the salt mines, was approximately a 3 hours drive from Islamabad, which ended up being 4 hours owing to the traffic divergence for protest towards peshawer road and the access road from chou-a-syedaan to Khewra, having road works.
An electric train took us inside the mine, everybody thoroughly enjoyed the bumpy ride.
The mines comprised of water caves and monuments of Minar-e-Pakistan and Badshahi Masjid made out of salt.
There were several small ponds of thick salty water in different areas of the mine. Wherein light is projected on the liquid in these pools it refracts and produces assorted colors that looked very beautiful.
Inside there were also two souvenir shops offering decoration pieces and lamps made up of salt stones, where students bought souvenirs such as salt lamps and decoration pieces made out of salt.
