Pakistan Independence Day — 14 August 🇵🇰

Independence Day is a reminder not only of the historic struggle through which the Muslims of the Subcontinent secured an independent homeland, but also of the responsibility that comes with freedom: to give it meaning through knowledge, character, national unity, and collective progress.

Allama Muhammad Iqbal envisioned a free and confident Muslim society rooted in Khudi (selfhood), intellectual freedom, moral strength, and creative action. Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, through his political vision, constitutional struggle, perseverance, and remarkable leadership, played the decisive role in turning that aspiration into the reality of Pakistan.

Today, Pakistan needs Iqbal’s intellectual self-confidence and Jinnah’s principles of unity, discipline, constitutionalism, and national responsibility more than ever. Freedom becomes truly meaningful when a nation invests in knowledge and research, transforms differences into dialogue, strengthens its institutions, and moves towards its collective future with confidence and a shared sense of responsibility.

On this Independence Day, the Iqbal International Institute for Research and Dialogue (IRD), International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), reaffirms its commitment to contributing to a peaceful, united, intellectually vibrant, and dignified Pakistan through the promotion of Iqbal’s thought, scholarly research, and meaningful dialogue.

Pakistan Paindabad! 🇵🇰

Sharia Today, authored by renowned scholar of Islamic law Dr. Muhammad Khalid Masud, is an important contribution to contemporary debates on Sharia and Islamic legal thought. Published by the Iqbal International Institute for Research and Dialogue (IRD) in collaboration with the National Book Foundation, the book brings together essays on Sharia as a concept of law, Iqbal’s reconstruction of Ijtihad, the normative foundations of Islamic law, Muslim minorities, democracy, secularism, gender equality, human rights, and the relationship between Sharia and political power.

A central theme of the book is that Sharia has historically been a discursive and dynamic tradition, continuously engaging with changing social, intellectual, and political realities. The volume also highlights the relevance of Maqasid al-Sharia in addressing contemporary legal and ethical challenges.

A recent address by Federal Minister for Interior Mr Mohsin Naqvi has renewed the national debate on administrative restructuring, the devolution of power to the grassroots, and broader governance reform.

In this context, Transforming Villages, authored by our esteemed colleague Dr Javed Ahmed Malik and published by the Iqbal International Institute for Research and Dialogue (IRD), has acquired fresh relevance. The book brings a fundamental question to the centre of the rural development debate: how can meaningful public participation in governance be ensured at the grassroots level?

Its central argument is that rural communities should no longer remain passive recipients of state patronage and development initiatives. Rather, they must be recognised and institutionalised as active and empowered stakeholders in local decision-making, public service delivery, and civic governance.

For scholars, policymakers, and readers interested in administrative decentralisation, new administrative units, local self-government, and the genuine devolution of authority, this book is an important and timely contribution.
