Renal portal system: The renal portal system is a specialized portal venous system present in reptiles and fish, excluding hagove and lampreys. It is absent in mammals. Its primary function is to supply blood to renal tubules when glomerular filtration is absent or downregulated. The main channel, the renal portal vein, develops from the posterior cardinal vein, bringing venous blood circulation from the tail and groin to the kidney, where it is diverted into a capillary network surrounding the convoluted tubules. The blood then enters the renal vein, passing either through the subcardinal veins and into the posterior cardinal veins or through the posterior vena cava. Notably, there is no renal portal vein in mammals 🐟🐠🦈🐳🐋
