ترجمہ:
حضرت ام المومنین عائشہ ؓ سے روایت ہے انہوں نے کہا عاشورہ کے دن لوگ روزہ رکھتے تھے جاہلیت میں اور حضرت رسول اللہ ﷺ بھی اس دن روزہ رکھتے تھے زمانہ جاہلیت میں پھر جب آئے رسول اللہ ﷺ مدینہ میں تو روزہ رکھا آپ ﷺ نے اس دن اور لوگوں کو بھی حکم کیا اس دن روزہ رکھنے کا پھر جب فرض ہوا رمضان تو رمضان ہی کے روزے فرض رہ گئے اور عاشورہ کا روزہ چھوڑ دیا گیا سو جس کا جی چاہے اس دن روزہ رکھے اور جس کا جی چاہے نہ رکھے۔

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ كَانَ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ يَوْمًا تَصُومُهُ قُرَيْشٌ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصُومُهُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ صَامَهُ وَأَمَرَ بِصِيَامِهِ فَلَمَّا فُرِضَ رَمَضَانُ كَانَ هُوَ الْفَرِيضَةَ وَتُرِكَ يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ فَمَنْ شَاءَ صَامَهُ وَمَنْ شَاءَ تَرَكَهُ

Translation:
Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that Aisha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "The day of Ashura was a day the Quraysh used to fast in the jahiliyya, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used also to fast it during the jahiliyya. Then when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came to Madina he fasted it and ordered that it be fasted. Then Ramadan was made obligatory, and that became the fard instead of Ashura, but whoever wanted to, fasted it, and whoever did not want to, did not fast it."
