Scientists from CNRS and international collaborators have shown that the aromaticity of flat, cyclic molecules significantly influences their chemical reactivity when placed on metallic surfaces. By studying carbazole, an aromatic molecule, they found that the type of metal surface (copper vs. gold) can cause different reaction pathways, even when only a minor structural change occurs (such as breaking or preserving an N–H bond).

Using high-resolution microscopy techniques like STM and AFM, researchers directly observed how the molecule interacts with the surface at the atomic and chemical bond level. On copper, carbazole undergoes N–H bond cleavage, leading to a different dimer than when on gold, where the N–H bond is retained. This minor modification disrupts the molecule’s electron distribution due to its aromatic nature, leading to the formation of two entirely different products.

The study highlights the critical role of aromaticity and surface-induced reactivity, paving the way for novel surface-assisted synthesis strategies and the design of new chemical compounds.
