2024: The Year Earth Sent Its Final Warning

2024 was the hottest year ever recorded, with temperatures reaching +1.54°C above pre-industrial levels (1951-1980) and atmospheric CO₂ concentrations rising above 425 ppm, demonstrating highest rise in both indicators. Emissions from fossil fuels continued persistent, reaching above 41.6 billion tonnes of CO₂. This climate trajectory is intensifying other stressors as well, such as 770 million people face chronic hunger, 343 million face acute food scarcity, and over 400 million people were on the move globally, including 123 million forced migrants. Meanwhile, societal and technological risks are escalating. The Doomsday Clock remains at 90 seconds to midnight, reflecting geopolitical tensions, technological threats from AI to bioengineering, and widespread misinformation that undermines public trust and effective governance. In sum, the year 2024 was not just as a year of climate extremity, but as a multidimensional turning point across Earth’s biosphere, economy, and civilization.
