A change in the Aliens Act was proposed and approved by Swedish parliament on 13 August 2026.

A person must have held a residence permit, which could lead to long-term habitation, for at least two years before dependent(s) can apply for a residence permit. Residence permit for study is not a permit that can lead to long-term habitation. This change will take effect on 1 October.
