TAHIRA BEGUM ELEMETARY SCHOOL – a journey towards literacy

Education is the single-most important driver of social, political and economic empowerment for individuals and countries. We agree that all children have the right to an education no matter which particular class or creed a child is. Nations which have invested in educating their citizens have made a remarkable progress beside alleviating poverty and providing prosperity. In Pakistan children from lower income group are vulnerable to all sorts of social evils. A major cause of poverty in our country is the lack of quality education to an increasing number of population. Hence the future of children from this class of families, which forms the majority of the total population of Pakistan, remains unpromising and this deprivation leads them to a variety of problems like addiction, begging, child labour and social crimes.

After living for over 3 decades in Hussainabad, Hyderabad Sindh (Pakistan) I realized that a majority of families do not send their children to schools because of two reasons, financial and social. The latter being more severe as parents do not realize what is education and perhaps thought it is only for the wealthy people. It requires lot to convince them that it is the basic right of the child to acquire education.

With this thing in mind and after retiring from my service from Beaconhouse school Hyderabad in 2010, I initiated a small teaching facility in our own house at Hussainabad, Hyderabad for poor girls and boys from our neighbourhood, often giving them attraction of food and other things to bring them to the class table. This strategy Alhamdolillah worked well and soon very many parents started sending their children and the strength went on increasing. Finally in 2014 a formal government registered school in the name of ‘Tahira Begum Elementary School’ came into being. Today this school has a strength of over 120 children including a nursery class. Beside this a section of this school in the evening has a sewing and knitting classes under the supervision of a well trained teacher, for young girls who learn how to stitch different household clothing. The school also has a facility of Quranic teaching to children and young girls as it was quite astonishing to note that most of them were unaware of the basics of our religion namaz, kalima etc.

The school runs exclusively on the donation from family, friends and other lovers of education. It has a dedicated staff of 10 people. The school provide course material, stationary and uniform for a majority of pupils free of cost and no tuition fee is charged. A thin minority of the children who can partially afford their expenses are charged Rs. 100 (Rupees one hundred only) as monthly tuition fee. We sincerely hope that few more people will join in our endeavour towards providing free education to a section of our society so that atleast this generation could be saved from the darkness of illiteracy.
