🐢 Why Turtles Eat Plastic

1. Not just because it looks like food

People once thought turtles ate plastic mainly because floating plastic bags looked like jellyfish, their favorite food.

But turtles have been found eating many kinds of plastic debris that don’t resemble jellyfish visually.

2. Smell plays a big role

Research shows that sea turtles are attracted to the odor given off by plastic that has been in the ocean. This plastic gets coated in algae and tiny sea organisms — a process called biofouling.

The smell from biofouled plastic can mimic the smells of real food in the water. Turtles detect these “food-like” smells and try to eat the plastic.

3. A chemical called dimethyl sulfide might be involved

Scientists think that dimethyl sulfide, a smell-producing compound released by the organisms on the plastic, may trick turtles into thinking the plastic is food.

📌 Why This Matters

Turtles can’t digest plastic, so eating it can cause blockages in their stomach and intestines, leading to malnutrition, injury, or even death. Plastic pollution in the ocean is a major threat to their survival — not just visually confusing them but misleading them through smell as well.
