The method and practice of the early scholars of Hadith was that they used to write down the Hadiths as they came to them, without following any particular arrangement or specific structure. At most, when they came across a word that required explanation or was in need of clarification, they would write its explanation in the margin. Later, when the era of the later scholars began, they organized and refined this material. This process of arrangement and refinement continued until it reached our own age. The journey in search of what is better and more perfect is still continuing.

Coming to the main point, it should be understood that a Muqaddimah (introduction) is of two types: “Muqaddimat al-‘Ilm” (Introduction to the Science) and “Muqaddimat al-Kitab” (Introduction to the Book). According to the earlier scholars, only the term “Muqaddimat al-‘Ilm” was used. The terminology “Muqaddimat al-Kitab” was introduced later. This was an innovation of the terminology by Imam Sa‘d al-Din al-Taftazani (may Allah have mercy on him).

It is self-evident that “Muqaddimat al-‘Ilm” is related to a particular field or science, whereas “Muqaddimat al-Kitab” is related to a particular book. The essence and summary of “Muqaddimat al-Kitab” consists of only two things:

1. An introduction to the author.
2. An introduction to the book.

Any matters discussed under these two headings are regarded as part of the “Muqaddimat al-Kitab.”

All six canonical books of Hadith (Sihah al-Sittah) belong to the same discipline, namely, the science of Hadith. Therefore, the “Muqaddimat al-‘Ilm” being discussed here is relevant to all these books of Hadith, and this introduction can be applied to all of them. This is different from the “Muqaddimat al-Kitab,” which is specific to each individual book.

From this perspective, “Muqaddimat al-‘Ilm” is general, whereas “Muqaddimat al-Kitab” is specific. In terms of order of discussion, the general is normally mentioned before the specific. Therefore, “Muqaddimat al-‘Ilm” will be discussed first.

Muqaddimat al-‘Ilm

It is the practice of scholars that at the beginning of every science, they discuss certain matters related to the fundamental principles and introductory aspects of that science. Through these discussions, essential information about the particular field is acquired.

Some scholars, at this point, discuss only three matters:

1. Definition
2. Subject matter
3. Purpose and objective

Understanding these three things gives a person insight into the study of a particular science. Therefore, as an introduction, these three matters are generally discussed at the beginning of every science and discipline.

However, most scholars, instead of discussing only three matters, give considerable attention to the following eight matters. These are known as “Ru’us-e-Thamaniyah” (the Eight Principal Topics) or “Buhuth-e-Thamaniyah” (the Eight Discussions):

1. The definition of the science
2. The reason for its name
3. The purpose and objective of the science
4. The subject matter of the science
5. The classification or branches of the sciences
6. The works and compilation of the science
7. The virtue and status of the science
8. The legal ruling concerning the science

Some scholars, instead of discussing the “Eight Discussions,” mention ten matters, which are known as the “Ten Matters.”

The First Discussion: Definition of the Science of Hadith

The first discussion will cover the following matters:

- The linguistic and terminological definition of Hadith
- Several closely related words used in the meaning of Hadith
- The definition of the science of Hadith
- The definition of ‘Ilm al-Riwayah (the Science of Hadith Transmission)
- The definition of ‘Ilm al-Dirayah (the Science of Hadith Understanding/Criticism)
- The definition of ‘Ilm Usul al-Hadith (the Science of the Principles of Hadith)

The Linguistic Meaning of Hadith

In the well-known Arabic lexicon Al-Sihah, the linguistic meaning of the word “Hadith” is given as:

That is, Hadith refers to speech or discourse, whether little or much.

Imam al-Sakhawi (may Allah have mercy on him) writes:

That is, linguistically, the word “Hadith” is the opposite of “Qadim” (ancient or pre-existent).
