Global data reveals Gen Z is the first generation to underperform their parents in attention, memory, and literacy skills.
For decades, global intelligence scores followed an upward trajectory known as the Flynn Effect. However, new neuroscientific research suggests this trend has sharply reversed. According to data from over 80 countries presented by Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath, Generation Z is the first demographic to score lower on key cognitive measures—including IQ, memory, and numeracy—than the Millennials who preceded them. This downturn, which became noticeable around 2010, marks a significant shift in human cognitive development, raising concerns about the long-term impact of modern digital environments on brain function.
Researchers point toward the ubiquitous presence of digital technology as a primary driver for these changes. As screen time increases, it often replaces the deep, interactive learning experiences necessary for building complex neural pathways. Critics emphasize that the shift away from critical thinking toward passive consumption may be fundamentally altering how the younger generation processes information. To combat this decline, experts are urging a return to balanced digital habits and richer, more immersive learning environments that challenge the mind beyond the digital interface.

Sweden is drawing international attention after deciding to refocus classroom learning on books, handwriting, and other traditional methods, following years of widespread reliance on digital devices in schools.
Teachers and education experts observed that excessive screen use was increasingly associated with declining reading comprehension, shorter attention spans, and weaker core skills among younger students. In response, educators began re-evaluating how constant digital exposure was shaping early learning and cognitive development.
Research supporting the shift suggests that writing by hand and reading from printed materials help students retain information more effectively and develop deeper understanding compared to screen-only instruction. These traditional practices engage the brain differently, strengthening memory, focus, and language processing skills.
Importantly, Sweden’s approach is not a rejection of technology. Instead, it reflects an effort to restore balance—using digital tools where they add value, while ensuring they do not replace fundamental learning experiences that build critical thinking and concentration.
By recalibrating the role of screens in education, Sweden aims to support healthier learning habits and stronger academic foundations. The move has sparked broader discussions worldwide about how schools can blend innovation with time-tested teaching methods, ensuring that technology enhances education without undermining essential cognitive growth.copy

A neuroscientist has told US lawmakers that Generation Z is the first generation showing lower intelligence levels than their parents, according to recent reporting.
Jared Cooney Horvath said cognitive skills have declined even though Gen Z spends more years in formal education than earlier generations. He explained that more schooling has not translated into stronger thinking or learning abilities.
Speaking to a United States Senate committee, Horvath pointed to heavy smartphone and screen use in schools as a key reason. He said teenagers now spend more than half of their waking time looking at screens.
