The Jews were first invited to embrace faith, then forbidden from mixing truth with falsehood and concealing the proofs of the Prophethood of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. After that, the religious obligations that became incumbent upon them after accepting faith were mentioned. They were commanded: O Children of Israel! Embrace faith and perform the five daily prayers like the Muslims, fulfilling all their rights and conditions. Just as Muslims give Zakat from their wealth, you should also give Zakat. Furthermore, offer prayers in congregation with My beloved Prophet ﷺ and his noble companions (may Allah be pleased with them).
Importance and Virtues of Congregational Prayer :
This verse encourages offering prayers in congregation, and numerous hadiths highlight its great virtue. Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that the Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
"Praying in congregation is twenty-seven times more virtuous than praying alone." (Sahih Bukhari)
Similarly, Hazrat Humran (may Allah be pleased with him), the servant of Hazrat Uthman Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated that the Holy Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever performs ablution perfectly, then goes to the obligatory prayer and prays with the Imam, his sins will be forgiven." (Shu'ab al-Iman)
Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Whoever performs ablution properly and goes to the mosque but finds that the people have already completed the prayer, Allah will grant him the same reward as those who prayed in congregation, without reducing their reward in any way." (Sunan Abi Dawood)
In another hadith, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"The most burdensome prayers for the hypocrites are the Isha and Fajr prayers. If they knew what blessings they contain, they would come to the mosque even if they had to crawl." (Sahih Muslim)
The Importance of Congregational Prayer in the Eyes of Scholars
The pious predecessors considered congregational prayer extremely significant, as demonstrated by these incidents:
1. Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated that Hazrat Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) once went to his orchard. When he returned, he found that people had already performed the Asr prayer. Upon seeing this, he recited "Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return", and said: "I have missed the congregational Asr prayer. I make you all witnesses that I have donated my orchard to the poor as charity so that it may serve as an expiation for this loss."
2. Hazrat Hatim al-Asamm (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Once I missed a congregational prayer, and only Abu Ishaq Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) offered me condolences. However, if my child had passed away, more than ten thousand people would have come to console me. This shows that people consider worldly losses greater than religious losses."
May Allah grant all Muslims the ability to offer their prayers in congregation. Ameen.
