The Department of English Linguistics, the Islamia University of Bahawalpur, organized a public defense of PhD scholar Ms. Wafa Iqbal on June 2, 2026, at the Sir Sadiq Muhammad Khan Library, Baghdad-ul-Jadeed Campus, IUB.
Ms. Wafa Iqbal successfully defended her doctoral thesis titled “Investigating Errors in Learners' English-Urdu Translation: A Study Based on Systemic Functional Linguistics.” She conducted her research under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mamuna Ghani, Former Dean, Faculty of Arts and Languages and Former Director, Executive Training Centre, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur.
The study offered a significant contribution to the field of Applied Linguistics by exploring learners’ translation errors through the lens of Systemic Functional Linguistics. The research highlighted the transformative role of systemic functional grammar in error analysis and proposed an objective rubric for assessing English-Urdu translation at the intermediate level.
Dr. Saba Sadia, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Government Sadiq College Women University Bahawalpur, participated in the defense as the external examiner.
The event was graced by Dr. Muhammad Mumtaz Khan, Chairman, Department of Saraiki, Dr. Zahoor Hussain, Associate Professor, Department of English Linguistics, Dr. Tahira Asghar, Associate Professor, Department of English Linguistics, Dr. Shahid Nawaz, Assistant Professor, Department of English Linguistics and Mr. Naveed Razzaq, Principal, Beaconhouse School System Bahawalpur.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Riaz Hussain, Chairman, Department of English Linguistics, congratulated both the supervisor and the scholar on the successful completion of the research. He appreciated their dedication and scholarly efforts and expressed confidence that the study would contribute meaningfully to the fields of translation studies and language assessment.
