The Department of Agronomy is one of the most thriving and flourishing department of the faculty of Agriculture and Environment, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur. Agronomy, which forms the basis of agriculture, was included as a major subject in the then University College of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences, IUB in 2009 and formally upgraded as a department in late 2012. s attracting talented students of the IUB and also from other august institutions for postgraduate studies. The department has the distinction of topping the table of most PhDs produced in the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, so far. It is an established fact that agriculture is the most vital sector of Pakistan’s economy and the economic revival of the country is primarily dependent on its boom and progress. Though there are promising varieties of almost all the major crops, favourable climate to grow these crops, fertile lands and the hardworking farmers, but still there are pivotal issues attributed to our agriculture as we are lagging behind most of the countries both in the developed and developing world in terms of productivity from a unit area. The solution to this greatest bottleneck is provided by the agronomists. The subject of Agronomy enables the students to understand and provide in-depth knowledge of the factors of crop production and to manipulate those factors in the best possible way. By virtue of Agronomy, we can better manage the crops by extracting the maximum potential of our cultivars, use the water, soil and climatic resources for the benefit of our agrarian community and maximize the output being attained from our fields. The department of Agronomy is performing this role in the best possible way in the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment. The department is focusing on a wide range of research areas such as irrigation management, physiological aspects of crops, drought-related studies, plant nutrition, evaluating the performance of exotic food species in South Punjab, microbial studies for the enrichment of soils and weed management to name a few. The main emphasis is given to the farmer-oriented problems regarding soil, water and environmental health and problems associated with different crops and advisory services to the farmers. The department has well-established laboratories and all the degree programs are approved by HEC and the council. The students have an excellent facility for field experimentation in the Agricultural Research Farm at walking distance from the department. The department draws its strength through cooperation and coordination with other agricultural research/ teaching institutes. Many graduates and postgraduate students have completed their degree and are serving in various reputed firms and government entities. The faculty strives to provide an environment in which students can reach their potential as individuals and as professionals. We strive for not only growth in factual knowledge and research skills but also broader intellectual growth. The funded research projects by Higher Education Commission, Pakistan are also in the credit of our faculty. The faculty members have published many scientific research papers, books, conference papers at the national and international level. The faculty members are highly qualified and have research experience in a specialized area of soil and environmental sciences from different countries. Proud Moment for the Department of Agronomy

An Inter-Departmental Quiz Competition was held today at the Faculty Auditorium, organized by the Agriculture Extension Students Club, Faculty of Agriculture and Environment. Teams from 10 departments participated in the event.
The team from the Department of Agronomy, comprising 7th semester students Usaid Rashid and Farman Ahmed, secured 1st Position and emerged as overall winners by excelling in all three segments of the competition: Written Round, Oral Round and Quiz Competition.
Prof. Dr. Tanveer Hussain Turabi, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture and Environment and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aown Sammar Raza, Chairman, Department of Agronomy, congratulated the winning students and appreciated their outstanding performance.

On the direction of Chairperson Agronomy Department Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aown Sammar Raza, internship committee members Dr. Muhammad Saqib, Dr. Abdul Rehman, and Dr. Salman Ahmad organized an official visit to the Regional Agricultural Research Institute (RARI), Bahawalpur, to evaluate the progress of agronomy interns. During the visit, the team met with the Director of RARI, Dr. Rashid Minhas, along with research supervisors including Senior Scientist Dr. Muhammad Shahid, Dr. Muhammad Imran, and Ms. Wajeha Anum. Detailed discussions were held regarding the interns’ research activities as well as the ongoing research trials on various crops at RARI. The supervisors expressed satisfaction with the interns’ learning attitude, dedication, and research interest in the field of agronomy. Furthermore, both sides showed a strong interest in fostering future research collaboration between RARI Bahawalpur and the Department of Agronomy, The Islamia University of Bahawalpur.

DayZee Farm Visit

Faculty members from the Department of Agronomy, IUB, visited DayZee Farm, Khairpur Tamewali, where they observed mechanized farming practices of alfalfa and Rhodes grass under a center pivot irrigation system, along with a visit to the cattle farm established at the site.
Prof. Dr. M. Aown Sammar Raza appreciated the dedication and performance of Agronomy students currently engaged in internships at the farm.
Mr. Ahmad Nawaz, Head of the Agriculture Farm, provided a comprehensive briefing on ongoing projects and farm activities.
Both the DayZee Farm management and the Chairman, Department of Agronomy, emphasized strengthening collaboration between the two institutions for future academic and practical engagements.

Congratulations to the students of the Department of Agronomy on receiving laptops under the Prime Minister Youth Laptop Scheme. The distribution ceremony held at The Islamia University of Bahawalpur marked an encouraging step toward empowering students with improved access to digital learning and academic resources.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aown Sammar Raza, Chairman, Department of Agronomy, along with Dr. Abdul Rehman (Departmental Focal Person for the scheme) and Dr. M. Usman Aslam (Incharge Student Affairs), congratulated the students on this achievement.

Once again, the Department of Agronomy secured the highest number of students selected on merit among all departments under the major subject selection of the PM Youth Laptop Scheme, reflecting the department’s strong academic performance and commitment to excellence.
