Types of Bonds in Chemistry ⚗️
1. Ionic Bond
Formed when electrons are transferred from one atom to another.
One atom becomes a positive ion (cation) and the other a negative ion (anion).
They attract each other due to electrostatic force.
Example: NaCl (Sodium Chloride)
2. Covalent Bond
Formed by sharing of electrons between atoms (usually non-metals).
It can be:
• Single bond (1 pair of electrons)
• Double bond (2 pairs)
• Triple bond (3 pairs)
Example: H₂O, CO₂, N₂
3. Metallic Bond
Found in metals.
Atoms share a sea of free electrons, which makes metals good conductors of heat and electricity.
Example: Cu, Fe, Al
4. Hydrogen Bond
A weak attraction between hydrogen and highly electronegative atoms like O, N, or F.
Very important in water and DNA structure.
Example: H₂O, DNA
5. Coordinate (Dative) Bond
One atom donates both electrons to form a bond.
A special type of covalent bond.
Example: NH₄⁺ (Ammonium ion)
6. Van der Waals Forces
Very weak forces caused by temporary dipoles.
Important in non-polar molecules.
Example: Noble gases, I₂
7. Polar Covalent Bond
Electrons are unequally shared due to electronegativity difference.
One side becomes δ+ and the other δ–.
Example: HCl, H₂O
