Crows have been observed performing a fascinating behavior known as Anting, where they deliberately allow ants to crawl through their feathers. When a crow feels irritated by parasites or discomfort in its plumage, it may land on an anthill, spread its wings, and remain still while ants move across its body. Scientists believe this behavior helps the bird manage parasites because many ants release Formic Acid, a chemical that can repel or kill bacteria, fungi, and external parasites.
Researchers note that anting is not unique to crows and has been recorded in many other bird species around the world. The behavior may function as a natural method of grooming and feather maintenance, helping birds maintain healthy plumage without the need for artificial treatments. This remarkable survival strategy demonstrates how animals instinctively use resources from their environment to maintain hygiene and health, highlighting the complex behavioral adaptations that have evolved in wildlife over millions of years.
