𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘: 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬

In the spirit of excellence and pride, we proudly salute Engr. Paula Faye T. Paez—the esteemed first female Mining Engineer produced by MSU-IIT, who now continues her intellectual pursuit as a second-year law student at NDMU College of Law.

Engineering, long perceived as a domain fraught with gender tension and historically dominated by men, once carried the notion that women struggled for acceptance. Engr. Paez, however, decisively assailed this narrative. She maintains that, even during her early career, women had already begun to rightfully claim their space, moving far beyond the margins. For her, the substantial progress women enjoy today is the fruit of generations of courage, made possible by the feminist movements that cleared the path before them.

Engr. Paez attributes her personal strength to the remarkable matriarchs who guided her: her mother and her grandmother. Her mother served as the inspiration to become a trailblazer and to boldly assert her voice in a world persistently attempting to quiet women. Her grandmother, who singularly raised her own children, embodied leadership and resilience. From these profound familial examples, she synthesized the enduring lesson that directs her life: the imperative to build herself so completely that she would never have to depend on anyone else.

Carrying these foundational values forward, Engr. Paez encourages young women to be bold in claiming their roles and spaces as they pursue their aspirations. She calls on them not to reside in anyone’s shadow, nor to settle merely for being a constituent part of something larger, but rather to stand as their own whole, guided by their distinct calling.

Simultaneously, she claims that true strength grows from gratitude and the paths others have laid before us. She often reflects upon a cherished quote that serves as a powerful reminder of our interconnectedness: “...You discover that you have your position because of the events of history and because of the individuals in the background making it possible for you to stand there”. This sentiment grounds the most striking aspect of her journey: the enduring reminder to walk our own path with authenticity, perpetually guided by gratitude.

Let us thus write our stories and claim them as genuinely ours, fully living and breathing in every line, paragraph, page, and chapter. Yet, regardless of where life may lead us, we must remain rooted in humility and afford respect to every individual.

This narrative, more than the prestige and award, remains fundamentally HERSTORY.

The Legal Education Board, in partnership with the University of the Philippines College of Law – Gender Law and Policy Program (UP GLPP), invites law students to the 9th iteration of Gender and Development 101: A Webinar on Gender Sensitivity for Law Students, to be held on 08 November 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. via Zoom.

The webinar seeks to provide participants with an overview of gender-related concepts and issues, with particular emphasis on gender rights issues in legal and educational institutions. This event aims to create a gender-sensitive, gender-aware, and gender-responsive legal community.

We encourage law schools to extend this invitation to their students, especially those in their first and second years. As an introductory session, this webinar will supplement the mandatory gender courses offered in the later years of legal education.
