Educating and Empowering Muslim Women according to the Qur’an and Sunnah

23/07/2026

📚How Were the Women of the Righteous Predecessors?

If you want the true picture of the women of the Salaf, don’t look at them only from the angle of hijab, but from the angle of faith, simplicity, knowledge, modesty, patience, family service, and worship.

These women were raised by the Qur’an before society raised them.

---

1️⃣ They Magnified the Word of Allah Above All

“And stay in your houses and do not display yourselves like the display of the former times of ignorance.” (Al‑Ahzab: 33)

“And let them draw their veils over their bosoms.” (An‑Nur: 31)

Aisha (RA) said:
“May Allah have mercy on the women of the early emigrants. When Allah revealed this verse, they tore their garments and covered themselves with them.”

They did not say: We need time or we’ll wait for society to change — they immediately obeyed Allah fully.

---

2️⃣ They Lived Simply, Content With Little

- Fatimah al‑Zahra (RA): She ground grain until her hands were marked, carried water until the rope left marks on her neck, and swept her house herself. When she asked the Prophet ﷺ for a servant, he instead taught her tasbih, tahmid, and takbir before sleep — her provision was remembrance, not luxury.

“Shall I not tell you of something better than a servant? When you go to bed, say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times.” (Agreed upon)

- Aisha (RA): She said, “Two months would pass without a fire being lit in the houses of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” When asked what they ate, she replied: “The two black things: dates and water.”

- Zaynab bint Jahsh (RA): She worked with her hands tanning hides and sewing, then gave all her earnings in charity. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The quickest of you to join me will be the one with the longest hand.”
They thought it meant physical length, but it meant generosity. She was the first of the Mothers of the Believers to die after the Prophet ﷺ.

---

3️⃣ They Sought Knowledge

Aisha (RA) said:
“How excellent are the women of the Ansar! Their modesty did not prevent them from seeking understanding in religion.”

They asked detailed questions about purification and worship, seeking Allah’s pleasure. Even senior companions referred to Aisha for fiqh and hadith.

---

4️⃣ Their Modesty Was Astonishing

During the incident of slander, when Safwan ibn al‑Mu‘attal saw Aisha (RA), she said:
“I covered my face with my jilbab.”
Her first instinct was to veil herself.

---

5️⃣ They Bore Poverty With Patience

Asma bint Abi Bakr (RA) carried date pits on her head over long distances and served her household herself, despite being the daughter of Abu Bakr al‑Siddiq. She saw it not as humiliation, but as worship.

---

6️⃣ Their Worship Was Intense

Umm al‑Darda (RA) prayed long into the night, with other devout women, until their feet swelled. Many completed the Qur’an regularly, fasted often, and gave abundant charity.

---

7️⃣ The World Was Not Their Greatest Concern

Months passed in the Prophet’s ﷺ household without cooked food, yet no complaints were reported from his wives. Their value lay in piety, not possessions.

“But the Hereafter is better and more lasting.” (Al‑A‘la: 17)

_____

📋 Summary
The women of the Salaf were not merely women who wore hijab. They were:
- Firm in faith
- Content with little
- Seekers of knowledge
- Devoted in worship
- Patient in poverty
- Dutiful to family
- Generous in charity
- Deeply modest
- Quick to obey Allah and His Messenger

This is the model that produced the generation which carried Islam to the world not just outward appearance, but faith, knowledge, worship, simplicity, patience, and noble character.

📚 Is it permissible for a woman to pray inside her home without wearing socks to cover her feet?

Answer: She is obligated to cover her feet with socks or long clothing. If she prays while wearing long clothing that covers her feet, then socks are not required. If her clothing is short, she should wear socks.

📚 Choose What Is Seen Now, Not What Is Awaited

Sheikh Ibnu Uthaymeen said:

“The lesson in matters is in what is visible, not in what is awaited. Pay attention to this useful principle: the lesson in matters is in what? Yes, in what is visible, not in what is awaited. You are not responsible for something unseen; you are responsible for what is right in front of you. From this, we understand the answer to a common question: A man proposes to a religiously committed woman, but he himself is not committed. She wants to marry him and says: ‘Perhaps Allah will guide him through me.’ Now, is this acting upon what is awaited or upon what is visible? Upon what is awaited. We don’t know yet. What is visible before us now is that he is not committed. So if she says: ‘Perhaps Allah will guide him through me,’ we reply: ‘And perhaps Allah will misguide you through him.’ Isn’t that so? Both are possible. And the likelihood of you being misled by him is greater than the likelihood of him being guided by you, because it is well known that a man’s authority over his wife is stronger than her authority over him. Isn’t that true? And how many men pressure their wives into what they want until she is forced to comply, even against her own will. This is something observed and experienced. The most important point here is that we must understand: a person is responsible for what is visible, not for what is awaited.”

-Sharhu Bulughil Marām (Kitābun Nikah)

"Allahumma Salli wa sallim 'ala nabiyyina Muhammad"

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Increase your prayers (salawāt) upon me on Friday and the night of Friday; for whoever sends one prayer upon me, Allah will send ten upon him.”
-Narrated by al‑Bayhaqi, authenticated by al‑Albani.

Scholars explain that when Allah “prays” upon someone, it means He bestows mercy, blessings, and raises their rank in return for one salawat send upon the Prophet ﷺ.

🌹An excerpt from tonight's lecture on "Fiqh of Women's Clothing and Adornment":

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"There are two types of the people of Hell whom I have not seen yet: people with whips like the tails of cattle, with which they strike the people, and WOMEN WHO ARE CLOTHED YET NAKED, walking with an enticing gait and causing others to do the same, with their heads looking like the humps of camels leaning to one side. They will not enter Paradise, nor will they even smell its fragrance, although its fragrance can be detected from such-and-such a distance."
[Narrated by Muslim]

"Clothed yet naked":
* This means that a woman covers a part of her body and uncovers another part to show off her beauty.
* Another interpretation is that she wears thin, transparent clothing that reveals the color of her skin.

"Walking with an enticing gait":
* It is said this means they deviate from obedience to Allah and from what they are strictly required to guard (their modesty).
* It is also interpreted as walking with a proud, swaggering, or strutting gait.
* Another view is that they style their hair in a slanted, tilted manner (a hairstyle historically associated with women of ill repute).

"Causing others to do the same":
* This means they teach others their blameworthy behavior.
* It is also said to mean they sway their shoulders provocatively while walking.
* Alternatively, it means they style other women's hair in that same slanted manner.

"Their heads looking like the humps of camels leaning to one side":
* This means they artificially enlarge and bulk up the appearance of their heads by wrapping turbans, headbands, or extra pieces of cloth (or hair) beneath their headcovers to make them look high and voluminous.

📚 Why did Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen change his university pen?

Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen (Rahimahullah), was sitting in his office at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University, correcting students' exam papers using one of the pens provided by the university for professors to use for academic and administrative tasks. While he was engrossed in his work, an acquaintance entered and sat with him. The acquaintance began to discuss a personal family matter unrelated to the university or the students. At that moment, the Sheikh acted unexpectedly. He immediately placed the pen he was holding on the desk, closed his university notebook, and took out another personal pen from his pocket to jot down a note concerning his relative. The man present was astonished by this meticulous action and asked the Sheikh in surprise, "Sheikh, why did you change pens? They are both fountain pens; it's a simple matter!"

Then Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen turned to him calmly and devoutly, and said words worthy of being written in gold:

“My brother, the first pen belongs to the university, and the ink it contains was purchased with university funds for the benefit of the university and the Muslim community. Now, however, we are discussing a personal matter unrelated to the university, so I cannot allow myself to use university ink for our own private affairs!”

With this stance, the Sheikh provided a profound lesson in integrity and the preservation of public funds, down to the smallest detail, such as a drop of ink.

📚 Good news to those who loves Quran

Allah loves the companion of the Qur’an, because the companion of the Qur’an loves the Qur’an and loves his Lord, Glorified and Exalted. It was among the supplications of Dawud (peace be upon him), as mentioned in Kitab al-Zuhd by Imam Ahmad, and it is also narrated as a supplication of our Prophet ﷺ:

“O Allah, I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love.”

Your love: meaning that I love You and that You love me.
The love of those who love You: meaning the righteous, the people of the Qur’an.
And the love of deeds that bring me closer to Your love: meaning acts of obedience, the greatest and most comprehensive of which is the Qur’an through action, recitation, and memorization.

-Sheikh Abdussalam Asshuway-ir (Hafidzahullah)
