The Pure and Analytical Research Center (PARC), in collaboration with Shimadzu Philippines Corporation, successfully conducted a Hands-On Training on High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to further strengthen the analytical competencies of faculty members, students, and research staff of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU).
The training was attended by selected faculty members and students from the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Chemistry under the College of Science and Mathematics, together with the staff of the Pure and Analytical Research Center, fostering interdisciplinary learning and collaborative research engagement.
To ensure a solid theoretical foundation, an online lecture was conducted days prior to the on-site training, covering the basic principles, components, and routine maintenance of HPLC systems. This preparatory session enabled participants to better appreciate the operational and analytical aspects of the instrument during the actual laboratory training.
The three-day hands-on training focused on both software and hardware operation of the HPLC system. Day 1 featured a demonstration of HPLC operation using LabSolutions software, with caffeine demo standards analyzed through a refractive index (RI) detector. Day 2 emphasized hands-on operation using LabSolutions, allowing participants to actively perform analyses with caffeine demo standards. Day 3 continued the hands-on sessions, this time utilizing paraben demo standards, followed by an afternoon lecture on basic HPLC troubleshooting, culminating in a post-training quiz to assess learning outcomes.
The training was mentored by Ms. Sharah Mae B. Garcia, a Senior Application Chemist of Shimadzu Philippines Corporation, who provided expert guidance on instrument operation, data interpretation, and common analytical challenges encountered in HPLC applications.
This capacity-building activity aimed to equip participants with the technical skills and operational competence necessary for the effective use of HPLC, one of the advanced analytical instruments housed at PARC under the Chemical Division. Through this initiative, PARC continues to support high-quality research, analytical excellence, and the advancement of scientific inquiry within the university.
PARC remains committed to empowering researchers through industry-linked training and state-of-the-art analytical platforms in pursuit of innovation and scientific rigor.

The Pure and Analytical Research Center (PARC), headed by Dr. Kay Ramos, continues its active deliverables for the research needs of the students, faculty, and other stakeholders for Western MIndanao State University (WMSU).
In line with its commitment for advancing research competencies, a one-day hands-on training was organized by PARC for Medical Biology students from the Department of Biological Sciences-College of Science and Mathematics. The training equipped the students with essential laboratory skills necessary for their Bachelorโs Thesis.
The PARC Coordinator-Molecular Division, Dr. Melbert Sepe, delivered an insightful mentorship on essential microtechniques in scientific research, focusing on proper micropipette handling and the operation of the rotary evaporator. Dr. Sepe guided students in mastering precise liquid measurement, solvent removal procedures, safety protocols, and the practical steps involved for plant extraction workflow.
For the UV-Vis spectrometer, Associate Professor Jayson Francisco, a Registered Chemist and a Staff of Chemical Division, delivered foundational lectures on the principles and methods of serial dilutions. These sessions were complemented by hands-on laboratory exercises, where students gained practical experience in instrument operation, data interpretation, and analytical applications. He emphasized both theoretical understanding and technical proficiency, equipping the students with essential skills for spectroscopic analysis.
Designed to strengthen foundational skills for research, the training focused on practical laboratory techniques, experimental design, and data analysis mentoring Medical Biology students with the technical proficiency and methodological rigor required to execute their Bachelorโs Thesis successfully. This immersive training emphasized critical thinking and precision, empowering students to navigate scientific inquiry with confidence.
PARC is driven by an unwavering dedication for advancements through meticulous scientific inquiry and to serve as a cornerstone for innovations.

Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) represents Region 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) for the 18th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week held at The Marison Hotel, Legazpi City, Albay on August 13-15, 2025.
Among the 17 regions, Ms. Kyla Dominique B. Barredo was selected as one of the Top 6 National Finalists for the Oral Research Paper Competition. Ms. Barredo presented her completed research titled โAssessment of Blood Vessel Proliferation and Cell Migration Potential of Jatropha podagrica (Buddha Belly) Root Extract through Angiogenesis and Wound Healing Assayโ. Her study offers a new inclusive solution where tradition meets science, and healing is no longer a waiting game, but a process we can understand, empower, and accelerate.
What is more promising as well, Ms. Naomi Isobel M. Gulifardo, made it as one of the Top 10 National Finalists for the Research Poster Contest with a research titled โEvaluation of Anti-Angiogenic and Teratogenic Potential of Gracilaria salicornia Methanolic Crude Extract in Chick Embryoโ. Ms. Gulifardo pointed to the possibility of a future where treating disease may not require a trade-off between survival and safety, where natural, often overlooked organisms like seaweeds could contribute to the development of safer therapeutic tools.
This outstanding research has been mentored by Dr. Melbert C. Sepe, the Molecular Division Coordinator of the Pure and Analytical Research Center (PARC) of WMSU. This marks the consecutive year where the mentees of Dr. Sepe have qualified to present their outputs at the national level, a testament for his commitment to the university's steadfast research and academic excellence.
Congratulations! Thank you for bringing honor and pride to the WMSU community.
One Health for All: Igniting Transdisciplinary Solutions for a Healthier Philippines.
