Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) reaffirmed its commitment to agri-aqua innovation and technology commercialization by actively participating in the RAISE Summit Week 2025. Held on October 13 to 16, 2025, at Casiana Hotel, Tagaytay City, the summit gathered the nation's top minds under the rallying theme: "Building Bridges through ALIGNment, CONNECTion, and SYNChronization for Agri-Aqua Innovation." ZSCMST's delegation, composed of Dr. Maila V. Pan, OIC-Vice President for Research, Innovation and Extension and also the project leader of ZSCMST-IPTBM together with Dr. Marlon Dennis C. Ochoa, Director of Training and Extension Office and Mr. Conqueror M. Tabamo, Legal Assistant II, engaged in high-level discussions, networking, and strategic planning sessions aimed at boosting the regional agri-aqua innovation system. Their participation underscores the College’s dedication to translating research into real-world applications and economic opportunities.

A significant highlight of ZSCMST's involvement was the successful completion of a crucial training workshop by two of its representatives. Dr. Marlon Dennis C. Ochoa and Mr. Conqueror M. Tabamo officially graduated from the training workshop focused on crafting a spin-off policy and spin-off agreement. This achievement is pivotal, as it equips the College with the necessary institutional tools to effectively launch and manage new "spin-offs"—based on its intellectual property and research breakthroughs. This policy is essential for navigating the legal and operational complexities of technology commercialization, ensuring that ZSCMST's innovations successfully reach the market and benefit the community.

The acquired knowledge and expertise during the RAISE summit week will empower ZSCMST to strategically operationalize the summit’s theme. By formalizing agreements and policies, the College is now better prepared to ALIGN its research with business strategies, foster stronger CONNECTions between researchers and entrepreneurs, and SYNCHRONIZE its technology transfer efforts for maximum impact. This strategic investment in capacity building is expected to accelerate the flow of innovative technologies from ZSCMST, solidifying its role as a key player in the nation's innovation ecosystem and driving sustainable and inclusive growth in Zamboanga Peninsula.

The Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) officially formalized an industry-academe partnership with Family Delicious Products Company by signing a Technology Licensing Agreement (TLA) for the innovative product 'Squopia' (squash-filled hopia) on September 29, 2025, at ZSCMST Research Conference Room.

Present during the momentous event were: ZSCMST College President, Dr. Roy L. Valesco; OIC-Vice President for Research, Innovation and Extension, Dr. Maila V. Pan, Dean of the College of Fisheries and Allied Sciences, Dr. Oliver D. Tito; Program Adviser of the BS Food Technology, Ms. Aldette D. Navarro; Director of the Technopreneurship and Innovation Office, Dr. Marlon Dennis C. Ochoa; Head of the Knowledge and Technology Protection Unit, Engr. Ray J. Arcillas; Head of the Technology Transfer and Marketing Unit, Mr. Erbert L. Medellin; faculty researcher under the College of Fisheries and Allied Sciences, Ms. Jeanette M. Reyes; and the technology generators, Ms. Kate D. Apolinario, Ms. Princess S. Janjawi, and Ms. Grace Hope T. Donio.

In his welcoming remarks, College President Dr. Roy L. Valesco emphasized the profound significance of the collaboration, positioning it as more than just a formal event but an initiative that underscores the institution’s commitment of transforming academic research into tangible economic value, proving that innovation developed in the laboratory can successfully transition to the marketplace.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the Family Delicious Products Company, CEO Mr. Roland Louis Y. Go delivered a message of acceptance, expressing strong support and enthusiasm for the new product.

This partnership is expected to open new avenues for further collaborative undertakings between the two institutions, ensuring the continuous utilization and development of the licensed technology. Lastly, to inspire faculty, researchers, and students to dream bigger, knowing their hard work can truly make a difference.

The Office of the Vice President for Research, Innovation and Extension (OVPRIE) through the Technopreneurship and Innovation Office (TIO), Knowledge and Technology Protection Unit (KTPU) and Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IPTBM) Office hosted the IPTBM Echo Seminar 2.0: Introduction to Intellectual Property, Prior Art Search, and Claims Drafting on September 19 and 20, 2025.

Held in the ZSCMST Research Conference Room, the two-day intensive workshop brought together faculty researchers from different colleges of the institution. The seminar is specifically designed to re-echo the learnings from advanced IP courses attended by key ZSCMST personnel. It aimed to strengthen the participants' capacity to safeguard their intellectual creations, a critical step in advancing the college’s research, innovation, and extension (RIE) agenda.

The success of the IPTBM Echo Seminar 2.0 marks another significant stride for ZSCMST's Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IPTBM) Office in its continuous effort to build an IP-conscious academic environment ready to translate research excellence into protected, commercially viable technologies.

A significant milestone was achieved in the intellectual property landscape of the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) as the institution successfully secured the Certificate of Registration for the official logo of the Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IPTBM) office.

Issued on August 18, 2025, the registration formally protects the distinct ZSCMST-IPTBM logo, which is prominently captioned with the powerful and strategic phrase, "RIE PRODUCE PROTECT PROSPER."

The successful registration of this trademark is a crucial strategic step, solidifying the legal ownership and exclusive rights of ZSCMST over its institutional brand identity.

This milestone is hoped to serve as an inspiration and a tangible demonstration to faculty, researchers, and students of the critical role that Intellectual Property protection plays in transforming academic output into real-world impact.
