ZSCMST Conducts Aquaculture-Related Trainings in Brgy. Mampang, Zamboanga City
The Office of the Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension conducted a two-day training on Saline-Tolerant Population of Improved Nilotica (SPIN) Tilapia, Fish Diseases and Health Management, and Shrimp Hatchery Production in collaboration with the Local Government of Zamboanga - Office of the City Agriculturist in Brgy. Mampang, Zamboanga City, on July 4-5,2026. This training has been conceptualized in relation to the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development funded project: Accelerated Acclimation and Optimum Transport for Maximum Production of SPIN Tilapia (AACT-SPIN) and the Department of Agriculture - Agriculture Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (DA-ACEF) funded project: Upgrading of the Fish Health Diagnostic Laboratory of Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST), Zamboanga City. It is also the request of the fishpond operators in Brgy. Mampang to learn more about shrimp hatchery production.
Lecturers during the said training include Mr. Abdullah Diamla, AACT-SPIN Project Staff, Ms. Sherrah Mae A. Pinote, faculty member of the College of Fisheries and Allied Sciences, and Dr. Maila V. Pan, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Extension and Project Leader of AACT-SPIN, a DOST-PCAARRD-funded project and DA-ACEF-funded project on Upgrading the Fish Health Diagnostics Laboratory in ZSCMST. Ms. Fatma U. Garingan, AACT-SPIN project staff, served as the facilitator during the said event, with the assistance of the Zamboanga City Office of the City Agriculturist staff.
The event was attended by fishpond operators from Brgys. Mampang, Manicahan, Vitali, Culianan, and Cawit, who actively participated during the lecture sessions. It is evident that the community is receptive to recent technologies and advances in aquaculture, and that reaching out to these stakeholders is the key. This training will be continued in ZSCMST laboratories for a hands-on training for the participants.

๐๐ Congratulations, Dr. Maila V. Pan! ๐๐
Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology (ZSCMST) proudly congratulates Dr. Maila V. Pan for securing the implementation of the โฑ5,000,000 DOST-PCAARRD-funded project under the GALING-PCAARRD Kontra Krisis Program.
Project Title: Pond-to-Plate (P2P): An Ecosystem-Based Aquaculture in Zamboanga Peninsula
This 12-month initiative aims to establish a climate-resilient, institution-driven Pond-to-Plate (P2P) system that integrates tilapia production, vegetable farming, and mycofeed enterprise development to strengthen food security, create sustainable livelihoods, and build resilient coastal communities across the Zamboanga Peninsula.
The project will:
โ
Establish a climate-resilient aquaculture and vegetable production system at ZSCMST and partner communities.
โ
Develop a functional mycofeed enterprise under the College's Income Generating Program (IGP), producing at least one ton of mycofeed for institutional and demonstration use.
โ
Expand hatchery-based fingerling distribution and support small-scale tilapia farmers through a scalable community food distribution system.
This milestone reflects ZSCMST's continuing commitment to advancing research, innovation, and sustainable community development through science-based solutions and strategic partnerships.
Congratulations once again, Dr. Pan and the entire project team! May this initiative create lasting impacts on food security, aquaculture development, and the lives of communities throughout the Zamboanga Peninsula.
