Today, August 31, 2026, the Philippines celebrates National Heroes Day, a national regular holiday observed every last Monday of August. This year, the national commemoration is officially held on August 31. (pia.gov.ph)
National Heroes Day has a long history. It began with Act No. 3827, approved in 1931, which declared the last Sunday of August as National Heroes Day. In 2007, Republic Act No. 9492 moved its observance to the last Monday of August. (issuances-library.senate.gov.ph)
REMEMBERING OUR HEROES
National Heroes Day honors Filipinos who gave their courage, sacrifices, and service for the country.
When we speak of Filipino heroes, we remember people such as Josรฉ Rizal, Andrรฉs Bonifacio, Apolinario Mabini, Gabriela Silang, and Melchora Aquinoโpeople whose lives became part of our history and our struggle for freedom and nationhood.
However, it is important to understand that the Philippines does not have a complete official list of proclaimed national heroes. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has established criteria for recognizing people of historical significance, but the NHCP has clarified that these criteria do not automatically make someone an officially proclaimed national hero. The NHCP explains that heroism involves sacrifice for the country, moral character, influence on present and future generations, a clear sense of nationhood, and contributions to the freedom and welfare of the Filipino people. (pna.gov.ph)
HEROISM IS NOT ONLY FOUND IN HISTORY BOOKS
Heroes are not only those whose names appear on monuments.
They can also be found in our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities.
The parent who works hard for the family.
The teacher who continues to inspire students.
The farmer who helps feed the nation.
The worker who performs honest work every day.
The volunteer who helps people without expecting anything in return.
And every Filipino who chooses to do what is right, even when no one is watching.
These acts may seem simple, but they help build a stronger country.
OUR DUTY AS FILIPINOS
Remembering our heroes is not only about looking at the past.
It is also about asking:
What can we do for the Philippines today?
We honor our heroes when we protect the freedom they helped build.
We honor them when we respect others.
We serve our communities.
We stand against injustice.
We choose truth over lies.
We choose unity over hatred.
And we choose service over empty promises.
The freedom we enjoy today came through the sacrifices of people who lived before us. We may never fully repay them, but we can honor their sacrifices by becoming responsible Filipinos and by leaving a better country for those who will come after us.
โThe heroes before us gave us a country to inherit. Our generation must give the next generation a country worth inheriting.โ
Heroism does not always require extraordinary acts.
Sometimes, it begins with one ordinary person choosing to do the right thing.
So today, let us remember those who fought for our freedom, those who served our people, and those who continue to make our communities better.
Let us remember their courage.
Let us learn from their sacrifices.
And most importantly, let us continue their work.
Remember the past.
Serve the present.
Protect the future.
