THE FULL CONTEXT OF SCRIPTURE

Any finding in the immediate context that contradicts the full context of Scripture—biblically, theologically, practically, doctrinally, or in principle—is wrong.

A passage should never be interpreted in a way that contradicts the overall message of Scripture. While immediate context is important, it must always harmonize with the full counsel of God’s Word centered on Christ and His finished work. Jesus Himself taught that all Scripture ultimately points to Him.

In Luke 24:27, “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.” Later, in Luke 24:44, Jesus declared that everything written in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms concerning Him must be fulfilled.

In John 5:39, He said, “These are the very Scriptures that testify about Me.” Jesus even told the religious leaders, “If you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me” (John 5:46). He also declared concerning Abraham, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day; he saw it and was glad” (John 8:56).

Mag-ingat sa mga nagtuturo na iisa lang ang alam na context at gumagawa ng sarili nilang exegesis. Kapag ang interpretasyon ay nakatuon lamang sa immediate context ngunit nakahiwalay sa kabuuang mensahe ng Kasulatan at hindi na nakasentro kay Cristo, mali na agad ito. Ang tamang interpretasyon ay hindi lamang dapat tama sa immediate context kundi dapat tama rin at nakaayon sa full context of Scripture na nagtuturo tungkol kay Cristo at sa Kaniyang tinapos na gawa sa krus.

Therefore, any interpretation that diminishes the cross, denies grace, exalts human effort above Christ, or contradicts the revealed character of God in Jesus is absolutely wrong. Christ and His finished work become the lens through which Scripture finds its proper meaning, harmony, and fulfillment.

You can only be correct in your interpretation of Scripture when you see Christ in all the Scriptures. (Bishop Emi Domingo)
