The Bachelor of Science in International Relations is a four-year degree program of Mindanao State University–General Santos, specializing in Diplomacy, Foreign Service, Regional Studies, and Peace and Conflict Resolution. The BS International Relations (BSIR) program at MSU GSC IR Department provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary curriculum covering key areas such as International Systems, Foreign Policy and IR, Geopolitical Studies, Diplomatic History and Processes, Foreign Languages, and related disciplines.

On 23 September 2026 the International Relations Department brought learning beyond the classroom as twenty-four IR students joined the 24th Philippine-Japan Festival Kick-Off Ceremony at Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School.

Students had the opportunity to hear from distinguished guests, including Hon. Hirotaka Ono, Consul General of Japan in Davao, and H.E. Ambassador Yoshiaki Miwa, former Ambassador of Japan and President of the Mindanao-Japan Science and Technology Platform (MJ-STeP), whose messages highlighted the enduring ties between the Philippines and Japan. The program also featured Filipino traditional dances, cultural presentations, and Japanese performances, giving our students a firsthand look at the people-to-people connections behind bilateral relations.

The experience continued at IMIN Museum in Calinan, where students explored Davao’s longstanding connections with Japan and the historical ties shaped by Japanese migration, communities, and the abaca industry.

The day wrapped up with an origami making activity, because apparently, cultural diplomacy also comes with a few folds.

From history and cultural exchange to a little hands on diplomacy, the educational tour gave our IR students a chance to see Philippine-Japan relations beyond the classroom and in the communities where these connections have taken shape.

As part of the 24th Philippine-Japan Festival, Dr. Anderson V. Villa, Chairperson of the International Relations Department and President of PHILAJAMES – Mindanao Chapter, joined Hon. Hirotaka Ono, Consul General of Japan in Davao, as a distinguished speaker in the Public Lecture Series held on September 21, 2026, at Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku (MKD), Davao City.

Going beyond the history of friendship, the lecture highlighted how education, cultural exchange, and people-to-people connections continue to give meaning to bilateral relations, reminding us that international partnerships are shaped not only by institutions, but also by the people who sustain them.

Through dialogue and an engaging open forum, students were invited to look at Philippine–Japan relations not simply as a shared history, but as an ongoing relationship with possibilities for cooperation, understanding, and a shared future.

‎Under the glittering stars and dazzling lights, the freshies of the Bachelor of Science in International Relations stepped into the spotlight for Freshies Night 2026, themed “𝟲𝟬’𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼: 𝗚𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘇 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘀,” held at the MSU-Gensan Gymnasium.

‎From Yells Competition to Wannabe, our freshies brought the energy, pride, and camaraderie of the International Relations family to the annual celebration. Together with their seniors and with the unwavering support of the college.

The International Relations Department of Mindanao State University–General Santos (MSU-Gensan) conducted a benchmarking visit to Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) on September 9 with three second-year BS International Relations students, IRD Chairperson Dr. Anderson Villa, IRD faculty Dr. Melvin Jabar, Halal Research and Training Center Director Mr. Jamilnur Sarip, Islamic Studies faculty Mr. Mohammad Borhan Emam, and IRD Secretary Ms. Alexandra Mituda.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by Br. Noelvic H. Deloria, S.C., HCDC President, Dr. Teresa P. Fabiania, Vice President for Academic Affairs, faculty members from the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management Education, and Mr. Rhys Lloyd D. Lacia, Focal Person of the Institute of Davao Studies (IDS).

The benchmarking focused on the Institute of Davao Studies, Halal research, internationalization initiatives, and potential areas for institutional collaboration, including opportunities to further document and explore General Santos and Mindanao’s history, culture, and heritage. The delegation also learned about HCDC’s efforts to support its Muslim student community, including prayer facilities and initiatives such as iftar drives.

The visit, complemented by a campus tour, opened new possibilities for collaboration in Mindanao Studies, cultural heritage, Halal initiatives, research, and internationalization, strengthening MSU-Gensan’s commitment to building partnerships that connect local knowledge with global perspectives.

The International Relations Department of Mindanao State University–General Santos (MSU-Gensan), together with 17 first- and second-year BS International Relations students, IR Chairperson Mr. Anderson Villa, Islamic Studies faculty members Mr. Mohammad Borhan Emam and Ms. Noraima Pada, and IRD Secretary Ms. Alexandra Mituda, conducted a benchmarking and courtesy visit on September 8 to the International Studies Department of Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU).

The delegation was welcomed by Ms. Krizza Janica B. Mahinay, Chairperson of the International Studies Department, Mr. John Harvey D. Gamas, faculty member and published researcher in International History, and Ms. Monica A. Villa Abrille, Director of the Center for Politics and International Affairs.

The activity featured an exchange on academic programs, departmental initiatives, student-led activities, and organizational practices, with Allynea Korynne A. Sy, Internal Vice President of the Ateneo International Studies Student Organization (AISSO) and third-year AB International Studies student, sharing the organization’s activities, projects, and student initiatives.

The visit also included a campus and library tour, giving MSU-Gensan students an opportunity to experience ADDU’s academic environment and learning resources firsthand.

The Mindanao State University–General Santos (MSU-Gensan) International Relations Department paid a courtesy visit to the Consulate General of Japan in Davao on 9 September 2026, bringing together four BS International Relations students and faculty and administrative representatives, including representatives from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development (OVCPD), to engage in dialogue on Japan–Philippines relations and potential areas of cooperation.

Heading the delegation was IR Chairperson Dr. Anderson Villa, together with IR faculty member Dr. Melvin Jabar, Director of the Halal Research and Training Center Mr. Jamilnur Sarip, Islamic Studies faculty member Mr. Mohammad Borhan Emam, Prof. Jovanie C. Espesor, PhD and Mr. Jerick C. Bejarin from the MSU-Gensan Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development, and IR Department Secretary Alexandra Mituda.

The delegation was warmly received by Consul General Hirotaka Ono and Vice Consul Airi Nakata. Discussions covered the Mindanao earthquake and its impact on General Santos City, the activities of the Halal Research and Training Center, and possible internship opportunities for MSU-Gensan International Relations students.

The discussion provided students and faculty with a valuable opportunity to engage directly with Japanese diplomatic representatives on matters relevant to Mindanao, education, and professional development.

The visit also opened opportunities for continued dialogue between MSU-Gensan and the Consulate General of Japan, particularly in areas involving student development, academic research, and greater understanding of Japan–Philippines relations.

The Mindanao State University–General Santos (MSU-Gensan) International Relations Department paid a courtesy visit to the Consulate General of Malaysia on 8 September 2026, bringing together 17 first- and second-year BS International Relations students and faculty representatives to explore opportunities for stronger academic and institutional cooperation between Malaysia and the Philippines.

The delegation was headed by IR Chairperson Dr. Anderson V. Villa, with Dr. Melvin A. Jabar, Director of the Halal Research Training Center Mr. Jamilnur Sarip, Islamic Studies faculty members Ms. Noraima Pada and Mr. Mohammad Borhan Emam, and IR Department Secretary Alexandra Mituda.

The MSU-Gensan delegation was warmly received by Consul General Deddy Faisal Salleh, with discussions focusing on possible areas of academic and institutional collaboration between the Consulate and the University. Among the opportunities explored was the possibility of internship placements for MSU-Gensan IR students, giving future diplomats and international relations practitioners an avenue for firsthand exposure to consular and diplomatic work.

The exchange also gave our students the opportunity to engage directly with the Consul General, who generously entertained their questions and shared insights on diplomacy, international relations, and Malaysia–Philippines engagement.

And, in true spirit of people-to-people diplomacy, the visit concluded with the delegation being treated to a selection of Malaysian cuisine—a fitting reminder that international relations is not only about institutions and agreements, but also about conversations, culture, and connections.

For the MSU-Gensan International Relations Department, the visit reflects our continuing commitment to internationalization, experiential learning, and meaningful engagement with the diplomatic community.

The Mindanao State University–General Santos (MSU-Gensan) International Relations Department paid a courtesy visit to the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Davao City (CGRI Davao City) on 8 September 2026, where the delegation was warmly received by Consul General Agus Trenggono, together with Consul for Information, Social and Cultural Affairs Johannes Manginsela. The visit explored opportunities for stronger educational and institutional cooperation between Indonesia and the Philippines.

Heading the delegation was IR Chairperson Dr. Anderson V. Villa, together with IR faculty member Dr. Melvin A. Jabar, Director of the Halal Research Training Center Mr. Jamilnur Sarip, Islamic Studies faculty members Ms. Noraima Pada and Mr. Mohammad Borhan Emam, IR Department Secretary Alexandra Mituda, and three second-year BS International Relations students.

The discussion opened possibilities for student and faculty exchanges, academic program development, and other forms of international academic collaboration. The Consulate General also expressed openness to accepting MSU-Gensan International Relations students for internship opportunities in 2027, providing students with a valuable avenue to gain firsthand exposure to diplomatic and consular work.

The delegation also visited the Sekolah Indonesia Davao, located beside the Consulate, where they had the opportunity to observe how Indonesian students are educated in the Philippines while maintaining connections to Indonesian language, culture, identity, and values. Established in 1968, SID serves as an Indonesian overseas school and aims to develop globally competitive learners grounded in Pancasila values.

For our IR students, the visit offered a valuable opportunity to see international relations beyond the classroom—from diplomatic engagement to the role of education in strengthening connections between countries.
