Yesterday we closed our very first Buhay Aralan Cookfest — our junior culinary science program under Tita Sai ( , our resident science teacher and nutritionist — and it exceeded everything we hoped for. 👏🏻 Sobrang husay Sai!
The judges were renowned chefs, certified nutritionists, and restaurateurs, and they were genuinely impressed. Tonkatsu, quiche, cacio e pepe, pan-seared tuna, menudo, shepherd's pie — all cooked beautifully. The pivots were graceful, the adjustments skillful, because these kids under 13 are so technically prepared. With no oven on-site, they still pulled off delicate recipes of their own choosing. 👨🏻🍳
That's what a year of life-skills learning looks like when it finally gets a stage. The creativity, the composure, the quiet ability to meet a problem on its feet really shines.
Much has been said, rightly, about the parents who made this happen. But I want to speak to the ones still doubting themselves.
What you know is enough. What you share from your heart is what makes it excellent. The weekly meet-up you showed up for. The monthly session you almost cancelled but didn't. Even the quiet online classes, where narrations this year have grown so rich I sometimes think the parents are learning more than the children. All of it is paying off.
We're on our sixth year of building this co-op together. Families have come and gone. Our lessons have changed. The way our children learn has changed.
Next year, the shape of our co-op will change too. But the invitation stays the same:
Build the learning circle.
Because this is what happens when parents organize together. Cookfests. Showcases. Outreach days. The courage to try something new, because another mom said yes alongside you.
If you're feeling inspired by what these homeschool families built — that feeling is the invitation. You wouldn't feel it if you couldn't do it too.
My only job was to remind the moms to celebrate each other, and let the children self-organize. Everything else belonged to them.
One more event left this school year. And then — we begin again. Grateful for all our Buhay Aralan Moms, and special mention to and ka
