𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗜𝗔𝗟 𝗝𝗢𝗜𝗡𝗧 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗨𝗣 𝗗𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗡 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗟𝗘𝗚𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗖𝗜𝗟 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗥𝗚𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗭𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗘𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗦𝗔𝗥𝗔 𝗗𝗨𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗧𝗘

For almost three years, the Filipino people have waited for accountability. Since the first impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte were filed in 2024, the constitutional process has been repeatedly delayed by legal disputes and political maneuvering. Although the initial impeachment effort was halted due to the constitutional one-year bar on multiple impeachment complaints, new complaints were filed after the prescribed period. As the Senate convenes as an impeachment court, its constitutional duty is clear: to judge Vice President Duterte on the evidence, not on political loyalties or the shifting tides of public opinion. We will no longer tolerate the clear procrastination of the long overdue impeachment of the Vice President. When accountability is postponed, injustice is prolonged.

The impeachment of Vice President Duterte is not rooted in a single controversy. It arises from a series of documented actions that have raised serious questions about public accountability and constitutional governance. Among the articles of impeachment are allegations involving the misuse and questionable liquidation of confidential funds under the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education, the use of acknowledgment receipts bearing names that became subjects of congressional inquiry, refusal to fully cooperate with legislative investigations, public threats directed to multiple political people, and acts constituting culpable violations of the Constitution, such as graft, corruption, bribery, and betrayal of public trust.

This impeachment must not be reduced to a mere clash between the Marcos and Duterte camps. While political dynasties fight for power, Filipinos continue to suffer from soaring prices, low wages, attacks on democratic rights, and a government that serves elite interests over the people's welfare. More than exposing the failures of one official, this moment reveals a political system that enables corruption, impunity, and dynastic rule—weakening our sovereignty and allowing foreign powers, particularly the United States, to deepen their influence over our lands, resources, and national affairs. The real struggle is not between rival political families, but between a nation seeking genuine independence and a system that keeps it vulnerable to both domestic oppression and foreign domination.

As student-scientists, it is infuriating to know that even in the most premier institutes in the Philippines, laboratories, and facilities are still underwhelming and underfunded, all the while corruption takes the largest piece of the national budget that should be allocated to the people. Our discipline is grounded in evidence, critical inquiry, and intellectual integrity—values that compel us to stand against impunity, defend democratic institutions, and ensure that knowledge remains in the service of the Filipino people, not political or foreign interests. These same principles should govern the most critical institutions that greatly affect the lives of the people. That is, when evidence is ignored, when public funds cannot be transparently accounted for, and when those in power evade scrutiny, the burden of the consequences is dealt to those without power. Knowing this, the ongoing impeachment trial is more than just a constitutional process. It is an opportunity to affirm that no public official is above the law and that public office remains a public trust. It is also a reminder that genuine accountability cannot end with the conviction of one individual but rather with demanding accountability from every public official who clearly and brazenly shows corruption, authoritarianism, repression, and ideologies that undermine the welfare and sovereignty of the Filipino people.

We reject the false choice between competing political dynasties, because genuine change will never come from replacing one ruling family with another, all the while leaving untouched the system that breeds corruption, impunity, and foreign domination. The Filipino people seek not a new master but true liberation.

We call on the Senate to fulfill its constitutional duty with integrity, independence, and fidelity to the presented evidence. We call on students, scientists, educators, workers, and all Filipinos to continue to organize, speak out, and stand together in defense of truth, accountability, and the people’s democratic rights. The future of our nation depends not on those who cling to power but on people who understand that genuine progress can only be built through truth, accountability, and the courage to question what is unjust.
