The members of the Zooarch Lab had the honour of visiting the Museo del Galeón at the Mall of Asia Complex last April 29th, getting a first look into the fantastic museum featuring exhibits, artifacts, and a full-scale reconstruction of the 17th-century Galeón Espíritu Santo.

One of our lab’s current research projects is the Zooarchaeology of the Galleon Trade, headed by Dr. Juan Rofes, with several studies being handled by members of the lab. We look forward to collaborating further with the Museo in the future!

As of May 1st, 2026, the Museo del Galeón is now open to the public.

Last April 21st, the members of our lab attended a Conference on Mexico-Philippines Historical Relations and the presentation of the book “Vinos de Cocos, The Pilgrim Beverage” by Dra. Paulina Machuca, hosted by the Embassy of Mexico in the Philippines and held in the Ayala Museum.

This was a lovely evening of learning about the similarities and history between our two countries and discussing all the potential for future research and collaborations. Muchas gracias to the Mexican Embassy and to Dra. Machuca for the incredibly interesting lecture. We hope you can visit the UP School of Archaeology and our laboratory soon!

Last April 14th, Pala'wan collaborators from Maasin, Quezon, Palawan stopped by the Zooarch Lab as part of their research visit, alongside Zooarch professor Janine Ochoa. Thank you so much and we wish everyone the best in their endeavours!

As part of their Archaeology Field Trip, 3rd Year BS Anthropology students from UP Mindanao's DUGONG-Antro and their professor, UPSA alumna Aya Ragragio, visited UPSA last April 13th, 2026, and stopped by the Zooarch Lab, where we got to talk about our work with animal bones. Thanks for coming and we hope everybody was inspired!
