Fact #6 Smart Agricultural Solutions to Combat El Niño

Did you know? By the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Philippine-Sino Center for Agricultural Technology Director Marvin Cinense presents the Automated Furrow Irrigation System during the Technology to People Media Conference in Tarlac, highlighting its potential to help farmers manage water more efficiently and improve irrigation, especially during dry conditions.

To help farmers cope with these climate-related challenges, DOST showcased smart agricultural technologies designed to improve water management, increase crop productivity, and strengthen climate resilience.Among the innovations featured was the Automated Furrow Irrigation System (AFIS), installed in a sugarcane plantation in Paniqui, Tarlac. DOST also highlighted the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) installed in Barangay San Manuel, Tarlac City under the Project Smarter Approaches to Reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry (SARAI). SARAI Centralized National Hub for Regional Operations Project Leader Moises Dorado explained that the AWS has a monitoring radius of up to 20 kilometers, enabling it to provide localized weather information to surrounding farming communities.

FACT #5 — HANDA: Integrated Platform for Preparedness and Response

Did you know? Developed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through DOST-PHIVOLCS, HANDA was created to strengthen disaster preparedness and response across the Philippines. It serves as a unified disaster information platform, bringing together hazard data, location-based alerts, AI-assisted tools, and interactive dashboards to help communities and authorities quickly assess risks, make informed decisions, and act more effectively during emergencies.

HANDA continuously integrates information from agencies such as DOST-PHIVOLCS, DOST-PAGASA, and DENR-MGB, allowing users to monitor hazards and receive location-specific warnings in near real time. It also supports incident reporting, emergency SOS alerts, disaster tracking, and AI-assisted access to safety information, enabling faster coordination and a more effective response before, during, and after disasters.

𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪? The Robust Optical Aerosol Monitor (ROAM), co-developed by Dr. Len Herald Lim of the University of the Philippines Diliman and Engr. Paul Alexander Darvin of the University of the Philippines Los Baños, is the first Filipino-made air quality monitoring device.

Designed to work like an "air microscope," ROAM counts airborne particles with high accuracy and remains reliable even in dusty environments. Its durability and affordability make it a practical innovation for long-term air quality monitoring, particularly for local government units (LGUs).

𝗗𝗜𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪? VoiceGest is more than just a robotic hand—it is an assistive technology designed to make communication more inclusive. Through voice recognition, it translates spoken words into sign language hand gestures, helping bridge communication between hearing individuals and people with hearing or speech impairments.

Developed by students from De La Salle Lipa, VoiceGest earned recognition at the Murata Robolution 2025 for its innovative use of robotics to promote accessibility. The project demonstrates how technology can empower inclusive education and create better opportunities for communication.
