Today, February 21, marks the celebration of International Mother Language Day with the theme Youth Voices on Multilingual Education. According to the United Nations, International Mother Language Day was first proclaimed by UNESCO and later adopted by the UN General Assembly, highlighting the important role of languages in promoting inclusivity and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Young people play a crucial role in revitalising languages by integrating in daily conversations and making linguistic diversity more visible. Studies show that nearly 40% of learners worldwide still do not have access to education in a language they understand best, disproportionately affecting indigenous, migrant, and minority youth (UNESCO, 2021).

Due to the rapid advancement of technology, profound changes have emerged in the field of multilingualism. In this generation, language is not merely an approach to social reality; it serves as a fundamental foundation of education, reinforcing the deep connection between identity and support for learnersโ€™ languages.

Through ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐ž๐œ๐ญ ๐€๐ฒ๐ญ๐š๐ฅ๐š๐ค๐š๐ ๐ˆ๐ง๐  ๐‹๐š๐ก๐ข, we continue our goals and objectives of revitalising the language of the Aeta Mag-Antsi community, aiming to restore and preserve endangered and marginalised languages and cultures at risk of being lost. Through various initiatives which addressed Sustainable Development Goals 4, 10, 16 and 17 such as community engagement, education, and cultural activities, the project seeks to revive and strengthen the use of traditional languages and cultural practices among community members.

Multilingual education not only promotes inclusive societies but also supports in preserving non-dominant, minority, and indigenous languages. It is a an opportunity in achieving equitable access to education and lifelong learning for all.

Following the successful implementation of Self-Help Plus last year, which included three sessions focused on stress management introduction, core concepts, and values, the Culturally Relevant Guidance and Counseling Component conducted Self-Help Plus Phase 2 Session 4 on January 31, 2026. This phase consists of two sessions that complete the five-day training program developed by the World Health Organization.

The continuation aims to enable community members to fully acquire skills and knowledge in managing stress through evidence-based strategies that support mental health and overall well-being.

The session was led by the component head, Mr. Daniel T. Dizon, with the participation of student volunteers from the Department of Psychology and Human Services. The student volunteers facilitated group discussions, activities, and grounding exercises focused on integrating kindness into daily life. The activity was attended by members of the Aeta Mag-Antsi community.

Mr. Dizon opened the program with a message of gratitude on behalf of the team, emphasizing the value of the session in promoting holistic well-being. He stated, โ€œSa kabuuan po ng ating gagawin, ito po ay makatutulong sa ating buhay, kalusugan, sikolohikal at pangkalahatang kapakanan.โ€ The activity forms part of the ongoing initiative of Project Aytalakad Ing Lahi, which continues to strengthen mental health support among community members.

Session four of the five-day training program centered on kindness as both a personal and collective practice. Anchored in the Self-Help Plus framework, the discussion emphasized how kindness supports psychological well-being by fostering compassion, empathy, and connectedness.

Ms. Roella Hinayon, a psychology student, opened the discussion with a short grounding exercise to help participants breathe, acknowledge their feelings and thoughts, and reconnect with the present moment. She also provided a recap of the previous sessions, highlighting their connection to the current discussion. This was followed by a discussion led by Ms. Princess Sulay on unhooking from unkind thoughts and feelings. She emphasized that, โ€œThe more you get hooked by these thoughts, the more difficult it will be to act on your values.โ€ A paper-based activity allowed participants to recall harsh self-judgments and practice unhooking from them.

Ms. Honey Cosme further discussed befriending others, highlighting that small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference, especially for individuals experiencing difficulties. She noted that even simple gestures, such as placing a kind hand on someoneโ€™s shoulders, can offer support.

Building on this discussion, Jameson Javelle Mena focused on befriending oneself, emphasizing that โ€œthe kinder and more caring and supportive you are to your self, the more energy and motivation you will have to help or care for others.โ€ He highlighted self-kindness as a vital foundation for extending kindness to others.

Ms. Jucelle Anin then introduced problem-solving as a practical way of applying self-kindness. She reminded participants that while not all problems can be solved, choosing value-guided responses helps reduce suffering, strengthens self-understanding, and enables individuals to relate to others with greater compassion and patience.

The session concluded with a final exercise facilitated by Ms. Eunice Ann Rosete, which utilized grounding and unhooking skills to help participants live according to their values and show kindness to others. This was followed by a reflection-sharing discussion among community members.

The session concluded by reminding community members to consistently practice kindness and reflect on their actions. The final session of the five-day training program will focus on learning how to open up and make room for difficult thoughts and feelings.

Project Aytalakad Ing Lahi remains committed to revitalization of language and culture of the Aeta Mag-Antsi community in Sitio Manabayukan through its various components addressing problems in major areas of concerns.

These efforts are led by dedicated project components and supported by our partner community, organizations, faculty extensionists, and student volunteers who conducted sustainable community development activities, share skills and services, impart knowledge, and provide essential resources in every activity with the community.

Throughout the year, the project has strengthened its purpose and goals, as proven by these accomplishments that highlight cultural representation, foster empowerment and unity, and promote shared responsibility toward sustainability and the preservation of culture and identity.

In pursuit of strengthening wellness and physical fitness, the Sports Component of Project Ayatalakad Ing Lahi conducted Aytalakad Ing Lahi: La Liga Manabayukan on December 20, 2025. The activity aimed to introduce knowledge in sports, strengthen holistic growth and development, and foster a sustained healthy lifestyle among the Aeta Mag-Antsi community.

Through this initiative, the program enhanced skill development, strengthened community building, integrated physical fitness, and supported a strong sense of belonging. It brought the Aeta Mag-Antsi into shared and collective experiences that empowered the community to connect, grow, and actively participate.

The activity was led by Prof. Rodel Macasaquit, Sports Component Head, Dr. Francelle L. Calub, Overall Project Head, together with faculty extensionists from the Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) under the College of Education and lecturers from the National Service Training Program (NSTP) Department. The event was also joined by student-volunteers from the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED), Capas Campus, who facilitated various activities for the children of Sitio Manabayukan.

Mr. Nelson Corpuz and Mr. Nestor Bautista, faculty members from the BPE program, led the basketball session participated in by Aeta Mag-Antsi youth and adults. The discussion highlighted the fundamentals of basketball, focusing on the officiating signals and techniques such as shooting, dribbling, passing, and basic defense. It further underscored values such as discipline and positive behavior that participants could develop through engagement in sports.

Following the session, a ceremonial turnover of basketball equipment was led by Prof. Macasaquit to the community, represented by Sitio Captain Orlando Gutierrez. In addition, Prof. Macasaquit shared that future activities will include training through guided drills and demonstrations to help the youth establish body control and mental stability, as well as an Inter-Team Basketball Competition for the community scheduled next year in support of sports development.

Moreover, BEED student-volunteers led various activities such as face painting, storytelling, and a community feeding program for the children, providing a space for self-expression. These activities encouraged positive reinforcement and social interaction that support emotional well-being, confidence, and physical wellness.

The Sports Component concluded the event with a meaningful closing that fostered community spirit and generosity through a gift-giving activity provided by the student volunteers and faculty. Through this gesture, community members received not only tangible items but also a sense of care and support that positively impacted their social well-being.
