RA 9003
RA 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, mandates schools in the Philippines to reduce waste, segregate at the source, and promote recycling and composting. Key aspects of its implementation in schools include:
• Waste Segregation: Classrooms should use separate bins for biodegradable, recyclable, and residual waste, often following the “three trash cans” rule.
• Curriculum Integration: Waste management concepts are integrated into science and other subjects to nurture environmental responsibility among students.
• School-Wide Initiatives: Schools must establish Materials Recovery Facilities (MRF), promote composting projects, and support zero-waste initiatives.
• Challenges: Enforcement consistency is a common challenge, along with inadequate student discipline in segregation and the need for better supervision.
The DepEd often issues mandates aligned with RA 9003, such as DepEd Order 5, s. 2014, to ensure compliance in schools.
