SUNSTAR | TUKOD ART EXHIBIT

Art takes many forms in TUKOD, an exhibition that brings together the Fine Arts artists and educators of the University of San Carlos (USC), showing how their creative practices continue beyond the classroom. The exhibition features works in photography, painting, digital art, sculpture, installation, film, fashion and mixed media, exploring the intersections of art, education, people and possibilities.

Thank you Sir Carlo De Vela for this article.

RESEARCH | Mr. Radel Paredes

Mr. Radel Paredes, a faculty member of Fine Arts, contributed the article “Ang Alampat Isip Pagtuman sa Kabubut-on: Usa ka Rebyu sa Obra ni Gerald Ismael ‘G.I.’ Pongase” to the latest issue of Katipunan Journal (Volume 13, No. 1), titled “Art Criticism in the Ilokano, Bikol, Sugbuanon, and Hiligaynon Languages.”

Published in collaboration with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Ateneo Art Gallery (AAG), the new issue brings together art criticism and analysis from across the regions, written in regional languages.

Its researchers and critics examine selected works by local painters and explore discourses on livelihood, history, aesthetics, and other issues relevant to their communities. By engaging with artworks through the languages of the communities that produced them, the issue investigates perspectives shaped by art outside Manila. It draws on Rosario Cruz-Lucero’s conceptual distinction between the bayan (local community or town) and the regions.

Contributors include Noji A. Bajet, Mark Louie Tabunan, Rene Boy E. Abiva, Jaime Jesus Uy Borlagdan, Dennis Gonzaga, Allan Popa, Trizer Dale D. Mansueto, Radel Paredes, and John E. Barrios.

UNBOUND HORIZONS | Mr. Melver Mercado

Melver Mercado is a visual artist from Cebu City, Philippines. He primarily works with watercolor and oil, and has a strong interest in landscape and marine subjects, where most of his works are inspired by travels around the country, a very tropical and maritime nation with bright sunlight ideal for painters looking for exotic subjects. His love for painting is an artistic progression. At a young age, it started by copying illustrations, creating graphic designs, and painting abstract pieces, until he studied fine art and become more serious, drawing toward representational art, who got him interested in portraying nature. For him, painting has become a comfort and a way of enjoying what is in front of him- the experience of color and atmosphere, the mood, and the merit found within the challenging process of creation.

Dive into the depths of his works in Unbound Horizons.

Exhibit runs until October 16, 2026 at Galerie Raphael Cebu, Ayala Center Cebu

UNBOUND HORIZONS | Ms. Geraldine "Gigi" Ocampo

Gigi Ocampo is a contemporary visual artist based in Cebu. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of San Carlos and a Master of Fine Arts from Santo Tomas. Her practice has shifted from women-related subject matter to internal exploration. In her latest work, she employs faded images, scratches, and drawn masking tape to reconstruct worn objects that echo the fragile act of salvaging personal memories and core beliefs.

Visit Unbound Horizons at Galerie Raphael Cebu, Ayala Center Cebu
Exhibit runs until October 16, 2026.
