Today, we celebrate the 107th birth anniversary of the Dean of Filipino Illustrators, Francisco Coching. A key figure during the golden age of Filipino comics in the 1950s and 1960s, he helped shape the medium into one of the country’s most popular art forms.
Coching mesmerized the comics-reading public, as well as his peers with an illustrious career that spanned four decades. His characters and settings reflected the conflicts, struggles, and changing times in Filipino society from the pre-colonial to the post-war eras. His works proved to be a treasure trove for Philippine cinema, with 51 of his 63 serialized stories adapted into iconic films and box-office hits by major studios such as LVN and Sampaguita Pictures. These include 𝘗𝘦𝘥𝘳𝘰 𝘗𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘬𝘰, 𝘚𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘰, and 𝘏𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘴 among many others.
For his immense contribution to Philippine art and popular culture, Francisco Coching was posthumously named National Artist for Visual Arts in 2014.
