The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) through the MMSU Language Center and the Department of Languages and Literature (DLL), honored their English Language Fellow, Mr. Michael Schapiro during a Send-Off Celebration held at the CAS Lobby.
The event which was dubbed as a โCelebration of a Meaningful Exchangeโ, served as a tribute and a commemoration to the university and collegeโs efforts in initiating international collaborations, intercultural understanding as well as facilitating academic experiences for students and faculty through international exchange - as the intimate gathering was graced by university officials, faculty members and students.
In his Opening Remarks, DLL Chairperson, Dr. Bryan R. Realgo congratulated the college and the department for facilitating another successful international partnership and exchange and extended his gratitude to Mr. Schapiro for providing a global perspective in teaching students as well as in learning.
Introducing the English Fellow, Asst. Prof. Ryan Roi B. Domingo, Chief of the MMSU Language Center recounted Mr. Schapiroโs 10-month stay and introduced him to the audience as a mentor, an expert English Fellow, a friend and an American citizen. He also recounted Mr. Schapiroโs favorite Filipino and Ilokano words, as well as Ilokano and Filipino cuisine.
One of the highlights of the program was Mr. Schapiroโs presentation of accomplishments in which he expressed his gratitude to the University and the college for welcoming him to the community. He also shared his reflections as to what he had learned about teaching here in the country, as well as his strengths and areas for development as a teacher, he also mentioned in his speech the importance of mutual understanding, โIn achieving mutual understanding, one must be able to possess hope, faith, perseverance, dedication and anticipate risks.โ
An intermission number followed as a song number was rendered by Geramel S. Dorotan, an graduating BA in English Language student.
Shortly after, university officials including MMSU President Dr. Virgilio Julius P. Manzano Jr., CAS Dean Dr. Marlina L. Lino and BA in English Languages Program Coordinator and Local Counterpart, Dr. Dexter A. Adriatico, expressed their messages of appreciation.
โAs you embark in another journey, I hope that when you look back here in MMSU, you will feel joy and remember the people youโve met along the way. MMSUโs your second home and you can always come back,โ Dr. Manzano Jr. remarked.
โAs an expression of our gratitude, I would like to highlight my message with 3 Ps. Pleasure, I hope that you had the pleasure of getting to know the culture and teaching our students, and we had the pleasure of guesting you here. Patience, I appreciate how patient you [Micheal] were in handling your students, and we could learn a thing or two from him as we must always have patience in handling our academic function as faculty members. And finally, P for Process. Succeeding is a process. In order to reach our goals, we must be persistent consistent and patient along the way.โ CAS Dean Marlina Lino expressed.
Furthermore, Dr. Lino expressed her gratitude to the University President for his unceasing support to CAS, for without which, DLL would not have been able to host another English Fellow.
Representing the student body, Ms. Angel Malapit, President of the English Language Society (ELSOC), delivered a tribute message to Mr. Schapiro highlighting in her speech that Ms. Schapiroโs teaching style is unique but effective, and that she was thankful for she was able to witness his professionalism and genuine passion for teaching, โYouโve [Mr. Schapiro] taught us that learning is not just about earning graders, but learning should be enjoyable, collaborative and exciting.โ
An Audio-Visual Presentation featuring a montage of pictures of Mr. Schapiroโs 10-month stay shortly followed.
As a symbol of gratitude and recognition, university officials presented Schapiro with a Certificate of Appreciation and tokens, acknowledging his dedicated service and meaningful contributions to the academic community.
The program concluded with a photo opportunity, a song number by Mr. Michael Schapiro and a fellowship lunch.
