⚠️ Behavior Basics: Punishment ⚠️
In ABA, the word punishment is often misunderstood.
Punishment does NOT mean harming, shaming, or hurting a person. In behavior analysis, punishment simply refers to:
➡️ A consequence that decreases the likelihood of a behavior happening again in the future.
There are two types:
➖ Positive Punishment
Adding something after a behavior to reduce it
Example: Additional chores after breaking a rule
➖ Negative Punishment
Removing something after a behavior to reduce it
Example: Losing screen time after inappropriate behavior
🌱 Ethical ABA emphasizes:
✔ Teaching replacement skills
✔ Reinforcement-based strategies
✔ Compassionate and least restrictive approaches
✔ Supporting long-term learning and independence
Understanding behavior terms correctly helps reduce misconceptions about ABA and promotes more ethical, evidence-based practice.

Behavior Basics: Reinforcement 💡
In Applied Behavior Analysis, reinforcement refers to a consequence that increases the likelihood of a behavior occurring again in the future.
When a behavior is followed by something meaningful or preferred for the learner, that behavior becomes more likely to be repeated.
Example:
A learner requests “water” 🗣️ and receives water 🧃
➡️ The requesting behavior is strengthened
Reinforcement is a foundational principle in ABA used to teach and increase meaningful skills such as communication, social interaction, and adaptive behaviors.
