My distinguished friend:

“I received your letter of the 27th of last month and excuse me for not having answered you before this, for I have had to consult some countrymen and books concerning your question about the hashish.

“No book, no historian that I know of speaks of any plant whose use is similar to that of the hashish. I myself, though, in 1879, used hashish, did it for experimental purposes, and I obtained the substance from a drugstore. I do not believe that its use had been introduced before or after the arrival of the Spaniards [in the 16th century]. The Filipinos drank arak, nipa-palm and coconut wine, etc. and they chewed buyo before the arrival of the Spaniards, but not hashish.

“Neither is a word resembling it found in the language. The is-is or asis is a kind of wild fig tree. “If I had Fr. Blanco’s Flora [de Filipinas], I could find out if this plant exists. I believe therefore that its use is unknown. O***m was introduced only after the arrival of the Spaniards. We Tagalogs call it 'apian.'

“I am here at Brussels at your disposal as always. If you could give me an introduction to some employee of the library, I would appreciate it.

“Most affectionately yours, Rizal.”

AMÚT Stands for - Advocating for Ma*****na Únderstanding and Transformation.

AMÚT is established by a Kapampangan pro-cannabis student with a passion for advocacy and education. This page was created to spread awareness about the controversial cannabis plant and highlight its potential benefits.

AMÚT aims to inform and empower Filipinos by providing accurate, evidence-based information about ma*****na, its uses, and its applications, while addressing widespread misconceptions and stigma.

At its core, AMÚT is dedicated to break the barriers of unawareness and misinformation about cannabis in the Philippines. AMÚT focuses on educating the public about the medicinal, economic, environmental, and social potentials of the ma*****na plant. It emphasizes the legitimate medical applications of cannabis, such as its ability to alleviate chronic pain, manage epilepsy, and support cancer-related treatments. AMÚT also highlights cannabis' potential to promote sustainability through industrial h**p and its ability to drive economic growth by creating equitable opportunities for farmers and small businesses.

AMÚT advocates for comprehensive policy reforms, including the legalization of medical cannabis and the decriminalization of ma*****na to address social justice issues, particularly the unequal enforcement of drug laws in marginalized communities. It supports the establishment of a regulated framework to ensure the responsible use, cultivation, and distribution of cannabis.

Through posts, articles, and discussions, AMÚT fosters informed conversations, encouraging Filipinos to make educated decisions and inspiring policymakers to implement science-based, equitable cannabis policies.

By promoting awareness, AMÚT envisions a future where cannabis is no longer stigmatized, but instead understood and utilized for its immense benefits, paving the way for compassionate and progressive reforms in the Philippines.
