10th COMMEMORATION of the 2016 WEST PHILIPPINE SEA ARBITRAL AWARD

July 12, 2016 marked a milestone for the Philippines. On that day, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague issued its ruling on the case filed by the Philippines vs China over disputes in the West Philippine Sea.

The tribunal ruled that China’s “nine-dash line” had no legal basis under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, UNCLOS. It also affirmed that features like Mischief Reef and Scarborough Shoal fall within the Philippines’ 200-nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone. That means Filipinos have sovereign rights to fish, explore resources, and protect marine life there.

The award didn’t settle everything, but it gave the Philippines a legal basis recognized by international law. Schools commemorate it to raise awareness about protecting our seas, supporting fisherfolk, and understanding how rules help keep peace between nations.

_“Our seas carry our history and our future. Knowing the facts is the first step to protecting them.”_
